1970 Honda CB350 Cafe - My first bike and build.

Hey guys,

I'm new here and have only recently found this great site. I thought my first post might as well be the start of my cafe build thread. Any advice and help anyone can offer along the way would be greatly appreciated! I know without a doubt that i'll be asking a lot of questions.... soon. I hope I don't drive ya'll crazy.

First, a little back story. (skip if you don't care for stories)
I don't know much about bikes. By much, I mean anything. I don't ride.....but its something i've always wanted to do. Years back, my brother gave me a short lesson and I took his cheap Yamaha around our neighborhood for about 5 minutes before I laid the bike down at a stop sign. Scared me a little, but the first 5 minutes rocked. 17 years passed. At some point I saw a picture of a black cb350 cafe racer and thought "now THATS my kind of bike" You always know your style when you see it. Its something about the lines of the bike. I'm sure you know what I mean. Recently a couple of my friends took up riding. That started the bug. I began searching craigslist and found a CB350 in rough shape.

Why build a bike if I don't even ride? Why not? I thought it would be a great way to learn everything about the bike i'll be riding from the inside out. Take my time learning everything I can. Months down the road when I have it going, i'll feel more confident about riding it and will use the very bike in a local motorcycle riding 101 class being offered here locally.

On to the bike
Rough shape, doesn't describe it poorly enough. Most parts were in boxes and strung around a shed. The engine was out and the previous owner said he was wanting to do a cafe racer, but never found the time. It sat in his shed non-running for 14 years. Parts were missing, carbs, speedo, seat. The bars were cut in half and moved below the top triple tree. (not welded together and moved independently) Trash, in other words. I thought about it for a week and decided I had to have it anyway.

April 30th I took her home...

Misc parts...

Well, thats enough for now, i'll try to post a few quick updates, i've done since i got her home. Wish me luck guys, i'm gonna need it. And thank you for letting me be a part of this great site.

Welcome to forum. Good luck with the build. Glad he didn't get it running with those handlebars. Seems dangerous and looks horrid.

You've got your hands full! I hope this bike cost $free.99 for the amount of time and money your about to put into it.

It's got potential if you've got time and patience. I'd start with the engine and get it running. After that full mock up, then tear it down, paint, reassemble. There's going to be a day or two in between each of those steps.

Thanks guys. What's the best way to clean up this engine before painting it? Degrease it with Gunk? Then blast it with a soda blaster?

degrease, wash with simple green, strip the clear, degrease, clean again, dry. prime, paint. I don't mean to sound negative friend but a cafe bike is not the easiest type of bike to learn to ride motorcycles. at the very least i would keep stock handle bars and foot controls till you get the hang of it. Just looking out . I am building a 72 350 as well I will be interested to see how you are progressing i have to create my thread still.

Welcome and congrats, I look forward to the build. Where do you happen to be located, I have extra cb350 parts and it looks like you may need a few.

Well, here is the progress I have made since I got it home. I tore down the bike. Stripped everything off the frame.

Got my cutting discs and angle grinder out and started trimming the fat. I wanted a cleaner frame so I cut off the side cover tabs and battery box bracket.

I also decided to cut off the rusted steering lock off the lower triple t.

Then, the frame, swingarm, and stand were off to be sandblasted and powder coated. I decided on a "black texture" coat instead of gloss black. I think it came out great.

I'm in eastern NC. but happy for any parts/help you could offer. Anyone have some extra carbs laying around... or a speedo?

Frame looks nice and tidy, sir. You have your work cut out for you, and I look forward to seeing your progress, sir.

Looking good so far. Have fun cleaning up that engine ;D I actually like the PO's upside handlebar mounts. With the right set of bars they'd be like poor man clipons.

I have a speedo and tach I would sell cheap. PM me if you want them. Good job on the bike so far. Keep it up.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with you build. I am working on my first as well (1971 CL 350) and getting about ready to have the frame powder coated. I think you will find tons of help and advice here on the forum as I have found. Cheers, Greg

Awesome! PM sent.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the Ton guys and for the offers of parts. Great community of people here willing to help out others.

When I took the triple tree off of the frame before having it sandblasted and powder coated, I didnt realize there were a ton of loose ball bearings that would fall right out once I took it apart. Needless to say they hit my garage floor and rolled every direction. Last night with a flashlight I found the last one. What a pain! Anyway.. I polished up the upper T and painted the lower T. Greased up both upper and lower bearings and put them all back in place. Finally have a reassembled T.

Here are a few pictures from yesterday.
Im not that good at buffing, and really, not sure If I still wont paint this.

I also started my education on forks. I took them apart. Made a mess. Drew a quick diagram.

Also started cleaning up the handlebar brackets.

Guys, I want to keep the original stand on the bike. Really, I like the way it keeps the bike upright when parked. I am wondering though if I am missing a piece that stops the stand from folding to far up. It seems right now I can take the spring on and off easily by just folding it upright.

Is there suppose to be a stop which always keeps tension on that spring?
