Grumpy retired oldtimer... "eat a Snickers bar"
Found on a local shop's scrap pile, I saved her for $100.

A few dollars more and an hour or two of labour she barked to life as a Cafe to live her second pampered life

A few hours, Ha, I'd hate to see what it could have been if you spent a lot of hours! Nice work.

Thanks guys, my wife already thinks I spend too much time in the ManCave ;D

Winter has buckled and temperatures rose to above 11C today and with the Cafe complete with seat I spent some time tuning the carbs and then went for a rip. Ya just have to when it gets nice out, so what if I have to wipe all the crap off her. She got to run free again no sticker, no helmet, no insurance, makes it all the more fun.

It's been awhile since I posted to this thread, but in Canada it's still fucking winter and I am still waiting to get an opportunity to tune the CB450 Cafe. So I have wrapped the pipes and fiddled with things an got as close to what I think will be the final settings but I still need to run her hard and check the plugchops! One thing I haven't done but I know I am real close is check the dynamic timing. For those that are familiar with the CB450 with Pamco ignitions you have to dynamically time them with a timing light, with the stator cover off. I know there are tricks to doing this so you don't spread oil all over the shop and table, but there are several reasons to make it more difficult in my project. I don't have a centre stand and I also don't have electric start so the lean it slightly to the right with the cover off makes kicking her over a little more difficult.

So with stil some weeks of waiting for Mother Nature to stop her Winter PMSing, I decided to buy a 1" thick slug of 6061 aluminum 6" round bar and machine a new stator cover that is just a little more accommodating to electronic ignition than the stock cover.

I machined a peep hole in mine directly over the timing prong large enough to see it and the timing marks. And fashioned an o-ring onto the plug so when installed it will be leak proof and I can run with this new cover permanently. Making periodic timing checks a piece of cake and somewhat oil free.

I haven't polished the cover yet as I may engrave the bikes name into the cover before spring gets here

I really think Honda should have designed something like this in the first place !!!!!

thats slick! makes life a lot easier and less messier, plus it has the bonus of looking custom cool

Looking at this I just keep thinking of how I really need a lathe

Thanks, yeah a lathe is a nice machine to have in the arsenal, keep your eyes open for a old lathe that still has life left in her. I got mine for $300 bucks and I have easily put that again into her to allow me to do pretty much anything I need her for.

I have been keeping an eye out for one but the pickins are slim.......lots of antiques and ones needing repair

Keep the pics and updates rolling
