Stumbled upon a 1971 Yamaha RD200 last night on craigslist. Emailed the guy and turns out he still has it. Its rough and needs a lot of work. Ad says it hasnt been registered in 30 years. My question to you is how much work would this take to get this thing rippin once again as far as motor goes. Lets say worst case scenario; motor is stuck. Most everything else should be pretty straight forward I imagine.
Its a 4 hour round trip to pick up the bike, but he is only asking $250. No need for a title in New York if its older than 1972. Worth it?
The RD200 is a kick ass bike. That said, not as many were sold in the States as were sold in Europe. In other words, parts are difficult to find and can be expensive.
Right off the bat, you'll need yo tear the motor down and replace all seals and gaskets. Hopefully none of the engine electrics are bad because they are near impossible to find (look up the starting/charging system for a 200). The list goes on from there. If you're willing to spend some cash, I'd say go for it but it really depends on actual condition. I still miss my 200. Quick little bastard.
Fantastic little bikes ! Lean them over as much as you want, and then some more....impossible to fall off. Absolute giant killers back in their day. Mind you, I don't think a 71 would be an RD would it? It was called a CS3 or similar back then...still had button start though as I recall.
I think youre right Titan. I tried to youtube it and found results mostly for cs3 bikes. I know little about two strokes which inspired me to get this little thing - to learn. Someday I'll own an rd hah
