have 1972 cb450 and just got done doing a rebuild of the top end. im having trouble adjusting the valves. i cant get the feeler gauge in between the follower and the cam lobe. I have the camshaft timed correctly and i have it on the compression stroke LT when i do the left side valves, but it still wont let the gauge in... using .03
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll have to assume that you have tried turning the eccentric adjuster. If you've cut the valve seats, and now can't get clearance, you might have to remove some material from the valve stem end. The end is hardened to a depth of about .050" if standard heat treating was used like case hardening or differential heating of just the end only.

if the eccentric adjuster is the flathead on the side then ya i tried turning that. i havent cut the valve seats....dont no what that is lmao. i just got new valves and stuck them in....am i screwed?

Honda had the K series in the 450 which is the 5 speed. The valves have a different part number from the original 4 speed camel back. Sounds like you have the wrong valves.

You are using .03 mm and not .03 inches right? Also you can rotate the engine to make sure the cam lobe isn't pressing on the follower.

thx for the help. i am using mm not inches and when i rotate the engine the lobes are pressing against the followers. ill check to see if i have the wrong valves....i think i reused them but it doesnt hurt to double check.....

would it be okay to just keep it without any spacing or is the spacing crucial to timing? again thx for all the help and info

Define "rebuild". How much did you do?

I imagine that your rocker arms are toast.

But the cam followers are bad when you have too much clearance. Not no clearance. As far as I know, there is only one cam follower that was used in the 450/500ts.
