1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember -done!

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Major updates, pic heavy

Thanks Ranger. This is the fruit of four months of work. I'm actually to the point where things come together quickly. You'll get there. ;)

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Major updates, pic heavy

So I go out to the shop this afternoon motivated to get some work done and some a-hole decides to take out three utility poles in a semi-truck knocking out the power to half my town. With no power I decided it was time to get the shop cleaned up since I havent done a good clean up all winter.

Now the powers back up so after dinner it's back to work on the bike. And I'm getting real close. I'll post up some progres pics later.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Major updates, pic heavy

Got the wiring harness done. Need to button up a few electrical items. Also got the battery box mounted. Going to go back to the original color scheme- jet black with gold stripes. Didnt care much for the glitter after looking at it for a few weeks. A little too "rainbow brite" for me.So, gotta paint the tins again. no biggie. Also need to take the seat in for upholstering since the wife decided I've killed enough of her sewing machines with all the cornhole bags and camper tops, etc. So gonna farm out the cover. I tried talking the owner into going with race pads versus the full upholstered seat but he said he needs the cushion. My next bike WILL have race pads for the seat.

In the meantime I have to load the clutch, rebuild/install the carbs, install my covers, etc, etc.

I'm going with my signature exhaust on this bike- 4n1 open header with a 7" turndown.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Major updates, pic heavy

You need to wash up Goldmember man! Bike is looking good! BSA looks like it could be made fun in little time with little money!

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Major updates, pic heavy

That the plan Ranger. BSA is gonna be a quickie. Goldmember is close but riding season is closer

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, punch list, video

Okay, finally gonna get out to the shop and start to wrap this thing up.

Here's the punch list:

install and adjsut front brake
install and adjust clutch
fill forks
finish handlebar controls
electrical system check/wrap loom
install carbs and adjust
final paint/stickers/fitment of seat and tank- seat getting upholstered as i write
final check of bolts/torque/etc
fire up
shakedown run
get paid

And some people have asked if my signature exhausts are overly loud. Being that I'm 100% deaf in one ear it's hard for me to say. My signature exhaust consists of air pods/4n1 header/7 inch turndown. I don't run mufflers. I can't stand them. On the smaller bore bikes most exhausts sound too quiet. This bike, like most of mine, are 500cc or less so they aren't any louder than a Harley or tuned crotch rocket. This exhaust on a 750 would probably be loud.

BTW- I have a company called 6Sigma Racing do my jet kits because they can set it up to my exact set up and altitude. I always have good results with their kits and minimal carb tuning is required.

At idle, it purrs like a kitten. When hammered, they roar to life

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Punch list, video

Damn that sounds good. Can't wait to hear mine.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Punch list, video

Thanks Ranger. I love the way it sounds too. Most people don't believe that rumble is coming from 500 cc. Although that's my bike and it's not Project Goldmember it's the same exact bike, year, displacement, and set up as the aforementioned Goldmember. I can't wait to push the button on Goldmember.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Punch list, video

Alright. I 've been way too busy to post and I didn't want to post boring pictures of puchlist bs. I have been sandbagging a bit though because I have gotten much done. Gonna gas her up and fire up this afternoon.

So here's what I've been up to:

The tank is three inches longer than the stock tank so I had to make a bracket to mount it.

Also got the wiring harness wrapped

The speedo bracket was short so I had to extend that as well

Seat, tank and sidecovers painted, for the third time. Still need to rub them out.

The seat cover is done:

I also re-torqued everything.Forum member DJ Elliot from 45 Garage rebuilt my carb rack. Thanks Dustin. Got those one and the pods and linkage done.

I also loaded the clutch and got all my covers on.

Hooked up the ignition/plug wires, grounded battery/frame, added about 100 zip ties, etc. You get the picture.

Later this afternoon I'm gonna give her some gas and oil and pop a battery in and see if she fires.

How she sat as of 2am last nite

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Punch list, video

Yeah Russ it fits perfectly. Nice work. And the beeza seat looks awesome too.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Punch list, video

She's just about done. I have to do the final tank and seat mount , bleed the brake, yadda yadda yadda but she runs. I should have her 100% this weekend and plan on taking her out for a shakedown run on Monday.

That fucker sounds mean, like it eats kittens and shits chaos.

Re: 1972 Honda CB500 Project Goldmember, Eat drink and be merry for tommorow we ride

Thanks Crescent. Thats how I like. Truth told though I was in my shop so the actual effect gets lost bouncing off the walls. It has a much more subdued tone when on the road.

Anyway, she's done:

CIMG1746.jpg

Rides awesome, fast, and loud. Need to do the final tuning, blah, blah, blah but have had her on several runs then bring her home, check bolts, fluid levels, etc,. Everytime I go out, I keep her out longer. Rides nice for a bike that hasn't run in 30 or so years.
