1972 TS185J

just me, if your going to ride this in vinduros and with all the apparent issues with the motor, I think you should pull the motor apart and put it back together knowing what you have? just me man....

Ok bit of an update.

I think I exaggerated re up down movement, though there is def some movement maybe 1-2 mm which I'm guessing would mean the needle bearing which I think you call the main bearing is prob worn out or broken.

Measured the piston 63.8 mm

Measured Barrel 63.9 mm

That's with my vernier calipers, digital not most expensive ones but atleast let's me know nothing has ever been done before. Piston just has the front arrow on it same as Kawasaki did, 100% sure orig piston.

Barrel looks ok like I said earlier, does appear to,have some slight scratches that you can just feel at base of barrel. No real nicks or lips at all around ports that I can see.

I also smoothed out the head a little, just concerned about 2 deeper holes, should they be filled with weld or something ? Or be ok , or buy new head

Let me know what you think, cheers

Also managed to get the pin out which I was happy about.

Top end bearing its called yeah, seemed ok, though you replace it anyway.
Definite movement up n down in rod see vid below.

Hey great work so far. Regarding the cylinder, don't even spend time thinking about it. Spend the $60 and get it bored and honed. Even if it looks perfect it still wears unevenly which is very hard to measure. It looks a little rough to me from the pics. Keep at it

Also when you get your piston make sure you pick up new needle bearings, wrist pin (the pin through the piston) and a new c clip. its not much more money and a lot of things can go badly if anything fails

cheers guys,

from info from other forums also etc, i think i might try to source another motor and treat this one as spares.

Generally TS bottom end are bullet proof, fact mines gone can add some costs etc.

if i can source another motor all it will really need is top end done and save me time and costs.

pretty sure the bottom end going is from what looks like standard engine oil in the oil pump from cousin / uncle years ago.

Yeah bit of an update.

bought my own torque wrench so dont have to borrown father in laws.

had a bit of a much around with kawasaki - thread updated on here.

Havent moved ahead on suzuki much yet, weekends been full and this coming one im away :(.

now that i know its full engine rebuild and that buying a second hand motor and just doing top end is really just a side step i know it will take some time so am in no rush etc.

my head on my 74' DT175 wasnt as scorned as yours but use a caliper and see what size it is and get a flexhone and it will clean up the cylinder walls really nice and make a nice 45 deg cross hatch for the new rings to rest in

Okay whats happened to this, still going to finish? or has the VT roady taken you to the dark side?

haha Andy not just the VT roady that is still under bike cover too :(

its the all too familiar annoying other things in life that have taken over.

christmas, newyear, 3 weddings / bux partys / winery trips on over 3 months, heading home to mildura for australia day etc

I havent had a weekend to do what i want re. bikes for zonks unfortunately

Though not saying i havent / am not enjoying all the other things just means projects are more long term than short.

hows everything with you going ?
