I just picked up this 72 Yamaha XS650 yesterday. Its my first road bike ever. I'm stoked because I was able to find a bike that had the major modifications already done. I dont really own any 'big boy' tools so most of the stuff I plan to accomplish is mainly cosmetic.
I have been wanting a bike like this for a while and I got inspired to finally do it after seeing what my buddy is doing to his Honda CM400. He is doing a complete re-build. You can see his post here: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=34262.0
So here is what the bike looks like now...As you can tell its got a theme to it already but I plan on going a different direction. First thing I need to do is get a pair of pod filters.
I'm not sure of the exact size to get though. The guy only gave me one and said it wasn't a good fit. He said I may need to get 50mm. Anyone know for sure?
HA! Those independent decals are actually holding the tank to the frame. I've never seen such things. Ya, I do really like the tank and cap though.
Not what I have planned for the long term :-\
The motor is pretty clean and has been kept in good condition. I definitely want to get in there and do some good cleaning though.
As you can see, the Metal Mulisha sticker definitely goes with the bike :
Below is a shot of the rear fender. If you look close you will see where the chain was digging in. So was added the 'skate wheel style' chain tensioner that is currently doing the job :-\
I like the old skool bones powel peralta skate wheel for the chain tensioner. Thats rad.
It would be easy to pull those crosses off the tank and replace them with a washer. The seat has got to go too. I really like the gas cap and brake light.
The gas tank looks like it has a rough finish on it? What kind of tires are those?
Also, Pod filters... It will probably run the best using K&N filters but they are pricy. You can get cheap ones too (Emigos) Let me know when you fid out what size you need and I can put an order in here: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/

The seat is a goner. The thing absolutely sucks balls (literally). Your right about the gas tank - it does have a rough finish. The tires are firestone.

I think I need 50's but I'm not 100%. These are the closest size I could find on their site. I'm going to try calling them to see if they know the exact size I need. In the specs it doesn't say it fits 1972, so I'm still on the hunt to find the right answer.
Love the Petrol cap............. and along with the rest of the gang I think those maltese crosses are friking gross and dangerous. I assume the seat is so narrow because the PO already got himself a mangina off them and didn't need anything wider to spread his equipment out on.

Went to the DMV today to get my bike registered. Had to physically take it in since it was last registered in a different state. F'ing guy must have painted over the flippin VIN!
Now I need to try and find where I think the VIN would be and scrape the paint off and go back to DMV. F!
Some states at so weird I bought mine with a Mississippi title and then went to my local DMV in Tennessee and just handed them title and they gave me a license plate. They don't even give a shit about seeing it. Haha
