1973 CB350... (she's getting there! new PICS!)

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

dont use the stock jap cross head screws... they suck.

go on egay and order a set of allen head bolts... theres a set that has every bolt for your motor.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

the only stuff i've touched related to the engine were carbs (cleaned them) and exhaust (removed, polished, and reinstalled). also installed a battery since it didn't come with one.

messed around with it a bit more yesterday.
switched the plugs from the left to the right just because, then pulled the plug wires and made it run on just the right, then the left, and it did. then i put both wires back on and it ran on both, but wouldn't take gas.

gave up and ate dinner, then when my dad got home i told him what i tried. he hits the starter and it fires right up, running on both, and taking gas. i dunno if it just needs run or what

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

well, i am going to say Stage 1, the restoration, is officially complete. i still have not decided what i'm doing with the seat, but now i'm leaning more towards single seater again since the thing barely stops with just me on it. also gotta repaint those side covers. bike fired up first try and has been running great although it doesn't drop back down to idle very quickly. will have to play around with it a little
anyways, here are some pictures. (first one is me, last one is my dad)

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Congrats on the running resto!

Now you have all summer to hoard parts and plan the attack!

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Looks super! THat one might deserve to stay stock. look for a real beater to customize.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Wow man, what a bike to start out with! Can't wait to see the transformation

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Looks great, but I say horde then chop, chop...

What kind of one up you got in mind? This guy would make a sweet, simple cafe. You might also go the 'Sleek Sexy' look with a nice brat flat seat like SausageMahoney's 360.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

i vote leave this one stock and look for a beater to chop

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

it's going to be a mild cafe. nothing is getting cut and i'm saving all of the stock pieces.

i have a set of Woodcraft clipons on the way, and i'll be lowering the headlight and installing some turn signals and a taillight from DCC. still need to decide on what bar-end mirrors i want

can someone post a link to sausagemahoney's bike?
i still have no clue what i want to do with the seat

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

bumping my thread up cuz i need some help.

dunno if i talked about this already, but if you rev it hard or just come to a stop after riding along, the bike keeps revving and returns to idle very slowly. i did some research and apparently if the intake boots are dryrotted and leak, it could cause this. i sprayed carb cleaner all around them while it was at idle to see if the engine speed would pick up, but nothing happened.

any ideas, guys?

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

You could try getting some teflon tape and wrapping the boots - just to see if it helps. Not as a long term solution.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

If the boots are leaking through the cracks it will rev when you hit it with ether or carb cleaner etc. you may have a synch issue. You need to be sure that your carbs are accelerating exactly in synch.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

I had a boot leaking and coated it with liquid electrical tape for a quick solution and it actually has yet to fail. So... I think it works fairly well for a cheap solution... the expensive solution would be to buy new ones

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Great looking to start with!
Could you be running a bit lean at idle, try richening
the a/f mixture by turning out the screw 1/4 at a time.

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

good stuff, thanks guys.

i already tried spraying carb cleaner on the boots, so i'm going to fiddle around with setting up the carbs some more

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

Hey what tires are you running on your bike? Did you replace them before you put it on the road or did you buy the bike with them on it already? I need some rubber and yours looks pretty sweet!

Re: 1973 CB350... my first bike build

they're brandy new Avon Roadriders. got them from Dennis Kirk for like $150ish for the both of em.

it came with some old, dryrotted, generic crap on there.
