1973 CB350F - Project Build Thread

Quick question

Is the oil filter bolt the same for the 350F and the 400F?

I got a replacement from EMGO but doesnt list that it fits a 350F only a 400F

Edit - Never mind - answered my own question EMGO's numbering system is off.

Awesome old school paint scheme!

Thanks I was going for a 40's-ish look as far as the color and something different for the paint scheme with a cool home built look.

So the damn oil filter bolt is completely stuck to the housing. I tried so far

PB

ViseGrips and Cheater bar

Crossing the nut with a dremel and impact screwdriver to beat it out.
Almost out of ideas since I don't have a welding rig.

Now thats a sweet project mate 8) 8) i know you've run ya motor have ya tried heating the nut up then getting ya cheat-bar on it , even try tighten it slightly then cracking it back again may help great build hope ya get sorted :p

Thanks.

Ya I heated it up, both the motor and the nut with a torch and no dice. This sucker is on there.

Likely not what you want to hear, but here goes: if you can't get the damned thing off, take consolation in knowing that you can always order another assembly and bolt (relatively easy find on Ebay, junkyard) and carefully smash the one you've got on it to get it off. Yes, this sucks. Yes, this is a last resort. But changing oil without changing the filter is like taking a shit and not wiping your ass (or at least that's what my Brit bike friend told me once). You're gonna need to change it. I resorted to this once, it sucks, but I haven't had the problem (or any others) with the bike since. When was the last time it was changed, do you know?

What does the head of that bolt look like? Can you post a photo?

Well the previous owner said he went through the motor, which is code for (I just want to sell the fucking thing). He basically tuned it so it would run.

So... could be 1973 for all I know.

I did drain the oil Seafoam'd it and the oil was relatively clean that came out.

The head is pretty mangled at this point, The consistency of the metal is almost lead like.

And I guess when I said "carefully smash" I meant go at it with an angle grinder. If you can get the head of the bolt off, or cut around it, and get the housing off, the bolt will come out much easier with no pressure on it (and there are holes in the bolt where you can slide things through to get a good grip to twist).

Haha ya I figured I would go all Hulk Smash on it. J/k

I was thinking of trying to criss-cross the head with a dremel into slices. I already have another bolt with me now, a little foresight after reading some of the other forum posts so If I can get it off it might be okay before ordering another housing.

Well I won.

Angle grinder had to be pulled out. There were still pieces of the flange of the oil bolt that still stuck to the housing which is trash now. eBay here I come....

The oil filter looked "ok" - super dirty though.

Okay up and running with new Oil filter cover just needs a good cleaning inside and out.

I was attempting to put in the new Dyna ignition, 5 Ohm coils and Accell 8mm wire that I got Dime City. I got the coils in, with some modifications, and the ignition.

Problem is the terminals they gave me for the wires are the snap on kind not the wire end like the plugs I have. Is there a different plug to use besides the NGK DE8A?

Other brands have equivalents, and they can look em up at the shop. They're also in the manual. But you might be able to find the tips for the plugs that screw on for that fitting (or if it's vice versa, those plugs will have little caps on the tips that will screw off).

Ya I found some terminal nuts in a pack of Autolite's - I just wasn't sure if the NGK's were the best for the new coils and ignition. They guys at the local Pepboys by me are about a degree above fully retarded so it makes it frustrating as hell having to hear them try to cross reference plugs.

Okay so new so everything is in and was setting up the timing on the Dyna S.

I got it to run but she backfires like crazy. I did the static test and the 1-4 and 2-3 marks are dead on to the engine case and the window.

I also checked with a timing light at 2500rpm and they are both dead on as well. Both are using the correct set of timing marks. I think....

Just wanted to update this thread - ignition was fixed, loose plug wire was causing backfire. Turns out the spark plug boot was just off the cap of the plug on #4 cylinder.

DOH!

Very nice.

Thanks man,

Having some shifting issues right now. Real clunky and doesn't want to get into gear always. Checked the oil level last night and it was rather high - hoping thats the issue.
