1975 CB550F Super Sport Value?

Been Around the Block
I feel like the title is not totally correct, but there is one is decent running shape near me for $800. It sounds like a good deal. How are these bikes as far as parts costs and what sort of issues are they known for? Thanks guys.

Re: 1976 CB550F Sport?

Great bike, and a good price depending on the condition. Check the usual: cosmetics, leaks/drips, complete (carbs, coils, switches, etc), when it last ran, compression, condition of spark plugs (oily?), condition of oil, has it been wrecked, rusty gas tank, true/straight wheels, timing chain rattle (if it runs), gears, electrics, brakes, stock airbox or pods (or open carbs), etc. Some of those are more serious than others, all can be leverage for talking down the price. These bikes can be bulletproof, and I don't think they have as much of a tendency for cam chain rattle as others.

1976 CB550F Sport?

Ok. So it's a 1975. And I finally had time to do a brief google search. It was called a CB550F Super Sport. I have heard of the 550F, but never with the SS name. What I read said that the F only had 4-1 pipes, some trim, side panels, and lower handle bars. This bike has 2-1 pipes on each side. It needs a new tank from a drop and the shift linkage on the rear sets need to be straightened or replaced. The fact that its an F doesn't seem like a big deal to me...bust especially on this one since none of the D stuff appears to be on it still. 33k on the motor. The guy says it runs smooth. It would be nice if he answered his phone rather than texted me once every 2 hours so I could just get all the info I need!! The bike appears to have pods and the electronics have been stuffed under the seat. I hope to get
More info soon. The wide will hate having a 4th Honda...but I won't. ;-)

Re: 1976 CB550F Sport?

Yeah, the F models were the Supersports, the K models the regular 550. The stock 4-1 exhaust is similar to the 400F -- it wraps around the oil filter -- and I think they look great. If the bike's been dropped, make sure to check for oil leaks, broken fins, bent pegs, etc., and to make sure it wasn't hit (bent frame). Still, seems like a decent deal. IF you want to revert to the 4-1 pipes, they're not that rare and not as expensive as the 400F pipes.

Good to know. I am going to look into some parts and see what I may be getting into.

Apparently we were looking at the same bike! Small world huh. Anywho I talked to the guy today and he informed me that it was sold. I hope it was you who bought it.

Also seems we live somewhat close to each other what town do you live in? I live in Palm Coast.

Fill us in - just stumbled into this thread. I owned a CB550F a while back, and a CB500K. The bike you looked at was modified, as it never came with rearsets, and the F model did indeed have 4 into 1 pipes, similar to the CB400F.

The 'F' in CB550F designates the SuperSport model. They're one and the same. The K which is usually left off the CB550K model designation is common across all the standard SOHC4 models. CB750K, CB500K, CB550K. The 350 I believe was CB350F but I could be wrong, and the 400 was only released in the F SuperSport model.

Sadly I did not. Haha, I take a few days off the forum and another dude posts up. The owner would rarely respond to me, it was horrible trying to get info. He just snagged it from "his son" and was trying to dump it, no questions asked. I asked him several times if I could come see it and never got a response either. He was asking $995 I think when I saw the post.

Anyways, I live in Lakeland. Are you going to hit up The Revivla Rally in Orlando tomorrow? (this should be a new post...)

Here is the thread for The Revival Rally. The search box is amazing!

After doing some quick Google research, I found that the F (Super Sport) model was mostly (or just) extra chrome trim, 4-1 pipes (MAC?), and um...different handle bars I think. And this guy appears to have removed all of it, which means the fact that it was an F didn't matter. I believe you are correct with the K and F designations.

The 4-1 pipes were OEM Honda, not MAC (aftermarket). If you haven't seen 'em, they're worth doing a google image search. They're like the 400F pipes, wrap around the oil filter, and they aren't hard to track down. But yeah, as far as I know, the differences were mostly cosmetic.

Yep all cosmetic and most of those differences dissapeared when the later CB500K got the flap gas tank vs the nice chrome cap version from the CB500. No mechanical differences at all.

550? Early 550s had chrome cap, up to 75.

Yup meant the 550K. My 73 500K was my first and one of my fave bikes. I had a 76 550F and always missed that chrome cap.

I'll pick up an early 550 one day when I have the room for it.

If this is the same bike that Zoopants was asking about in his thread, http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=55421.0 then I'm pretty sure it's not a 1975 or an F model. I have a 75 550F that I've brought back from the dead, and in the process I've learned a lot about the differences between the years. For one, that front fender with the dual mounting arms was prior 1975. When I got mine it had a different front fender but I bought one off of a 1974 because I thought it looked better, and the 1974 fender that I bought is the same one you have. Second, the rear passenger peg mounts on yours (where your rearsets are mounted) are definitely that of a K frame. Examine pics between the two years/models and I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about. You can also look up the serial numbers on the motor and on the frame to see the year it was made. Not that it really matters, but thought you should know.

Also, if you want to learn everything you'll ever want to know about this bike check out the sohc4 forums.

Thanks Noisewater. It is this kind of knowledge that makes things fun! I am starting to take notice of things like this with certain frames and its a cool feeling when you can figure out a bike from context clues.
