Here is my 1975 Yamaha DT 100 Cafe Racer project..... Picked the bike up for $100 bucks off of craigslist, today and started right in on it. It runs great, however found a little problem in the tranny you will see in these pictures, I will keep posting my progress and let me know what you think with it all and any suggestions you might have..... thanx a bunch

That poor bike! Well I am stoked to see it finished keep us updated. I am also thinking about making something like this for my sister.

I have one sitting in my garage that i beat the hell out of it and it always starts with two kicks, gotta love 2 strokes

Does anyone here know what motors are changeable with the DT 100.... i am not sure if i want to change it or not yet, but figured it wouldnt hurt to know to look at pricing? thanx

Cool bike dude,I started out on a similar bike, (suzuki ds100) would love to see it as a cafe.

Wow... not sure what spooge that is on your oil injector pump. I've heard of dudes disconnecting it and just running premix.

You may want to check out www.yamahaenduro.com, if you haven't already. I used it lots when I was working in my 68 DT1 250. Loads of knowledgeable guys on that forum. The site seems to be down at the moment, but you will find tons of valuable info there!

This should be a cool project! Good luck...

Would you be down with selling those headlight mounts?

Yes I will sell them... I wont be using them as I will be putting clipons the arms and want to do a different headlight system.... send me a message with your contact info and we will talk.... phone number and such...

ANYONE HAVE ANY WORD ON WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT A DIFFERENT MOTOR... LIKE WHAT WOULD BE A EASY SWAP?

Easy swap mate - you can change them out. You could also just dismount the injector and run premix at about 25:1 ('bout 5~6oz of oil per gallon of fuel). I would recommend a JASO-FC rated oil, but most anything will be fine for it as long as it says '2-stroke' on the bottle.

My Kawasaki G4TR (early KE100) is almost identical to the DT's in a lot of ways (frame especially) and the engine is easy to remove.

I would recommend getting a new piston, rings, gudgeon pin & bearing for the poor little thing, and if your budget extends to it... then get the bore replated to spec with something like Nickasil. Most modern engine reconditioners offer such a service, the little 100 should be about $200 to do and will save you in the long run.

Complete engines are getting hard to find in anything coming close to reasonable nick, so if yours runs and rides without problems I say keep it, and just do what I mentioned above - 30 year old piston rings have a habit of becoming fragile and breaking off into your case, jamming the transmission and potentially damaging the piston and bore.

Don't ask me how I know that fun little fact.

Cheers - boingk

I'm one of the mods at yamahaenduro.com - if the site was down, it may have been a momentary glitch. It is a good place for technical info.

I believe the 100, 125 & 175 motors all share the same mounting setup. On that year of 125 the electricks interchange. Some of the earlier 125 models will not as they are 12 volt, electric start.

I have a 75 dt400 that is destined for a project here, but several others Are ahead of it.

The oli pump goo looks like it may clean up. Try some rustol (harbor freight carries it) as it looks complete and worth the effort. Get yourself a manual, factory type preferred, as it will pay for itself.

You can find a complete parts diagram at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx?sb=4

Looking forward to seeing where you are going with this!

ANY CHANCE YOU WOULD SELL THAT 400? HA I DONT REALLY CARE TO HAVE A BIGGER ENGINE JUST BECAUSE THIS IS A FUN LITTLE PROJECT, BUT IF I DO SWAP IT OUT I WOULDNT OR FOR EITHER OF THE 125 OR 175, I WOULD WANT SOMETHING BIG.....ANYWAYS JUST ASKING.... I KNOW I CAN FIND MOTORS, BUT THIS IS MY FIRST TIME DOING THIS SORT OF PROJECT SO I AM WORRIED IF WHATEVER I GET THE FRAME WILL WITH STAND IT OR EVEN FIT. I GUESS THATS WHY I AM WONDERING ALL THE DIFFERENT POTENTIAL MODS THAT CAN BE DONE...

IF NOT....WHAT ABOUT POWER, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO OR ADD TO THIS LITTLE THING TO GET MORE OUT OF IT, I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE BIKE ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I AM DONE AND I AM NOT SURE THAT A 100CC WILL DO THE TRICK, BUT LIKE I SAID..... IM NEW TO THIS BUILDING BIKES

Sent you a pm about those headlight clamps, do you know the fork diameter, and the length of the clamps?

Naw - i've been collecting parts for the 400 project for too long! I am in the middle of the bike in my sigline - a 71 360. As far as bolt in, your options will be limited to the motors I mentioned. Anything larger would require changing mounting points - not that it couldn't be done . . .

I would think the 100 would be fine around town, but certainly not freeway material. You bave to remember they are designed for dirt, so are quite entertaining at speeds below about 45. I rode my 400 across a good portion of the country on the trans america trail, and it was fine, but I would not have enjoyed most of it nearly as much on my 125, which is running a 175 cylinder.

Got everything grinded down and working on trying to get the gas tank to the right shape as it has a few dents.... anyone have any pointers on getting dents out of those tanks....ALSO

had a big question.... Looking at possibly making my own custom oil tank.... has anyone done this before..... and if so... how did u go about doing it.... does it need to be any sort of special design? Does it need to be any special type of metal or thickness? And does it need to be coated inside or anything......

If anyone knows that would be awesome.....

Also wondering if anyone has any somewhat universal cafe seats that would be willing to sell? let me know people....

ohhh, seeing that expansion chamber has me wondering if one of those would work on my yb100. anyone from the peanut gallery care to comment on that idea?
