1976 CB 550 - new to me

do the stun

New Member
I've been looking for a CB for about two years, I've owned plenty of bikes during my life and always was fascinated with the Cafe Racer style but never owned one, so here's my chance. Just got it today and it has a few things immediately to fix -

Oil leak
Ignition switch (there is none, just a toggle)
Neutral switch

It's running but a little rough and leaking all that oil, so that's the very first issue to fix. I'll poke around here and there and post up when I need assistance.

Just thought I'd say hi!!!

good luck you and me both are working on the same bike..

Awesome! Post up a pic if you could. Just found an oil spot under the oil filter so I'll have to investigate that now too. Lots of fun unwrapping duct tape and electrical tape and hey, only one place had blue painters tape! Now the fun begins!

Excellent choice. I had the same bike (F model).

The Honda Service manual in a nice PDF is on the site - do a quick Search and you should find it.

Im on my second build and it happens to be a 550 as well.
It also looks like we have the same oil leak issue.

Thanks Tim! It came with a Haynes Manual but nothing beats the factory one! Thanks for the info, looking forward to tearing it this baby!

A quick look tells me the notch in the cover is not lined up properly with the fin, and perhaps it's not seated correctly? This is the first oil filter that's not all enclosed for me so I'll have to poke around and see what this is all about.

Hello. I am a new member and this is my first post. I know this topic hasn't been visited for a while but I'm hoping someone will check it.

I have recently also purchased a 76 CB550K. I am in the process of rebuilding it now. Before I got it, it sat for about 20 years, so now I'm trying to make her street worthy again.

My question is pertaining to the Neutral Switch. The previous owner had a gear indicator on the bike. The indicator was shot so I decided to just remove it. This is my first rebuild on this bike so I wasn't sure if there was something there originally that was discarded to make room for the gear indicator. I have a Clymer and a Honda Shop manual, neither of which go into this subject very much. I have found with some research that there is suppose to be a Neutral Switch Stator and Neutral Switch Rotor there. However I still can't find any detailed pictures of them installed on the bike. I have found diagrams and such but still doesn't give me a good reference for me to see if there are any other pieces that are missing.

Is there any way possible that some one could take a few pics inside their left side crankcase cover around the Neutral Switch area so I can use them as a reference?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Help me get this good ol' girl back on the road and breathing fresh air again!

Thanks much!!

Well your 1st post should not be on someone elses thread about their bike....start your own thread in the proper place...now back to the build

Didn't mean to offend, I am new to forums, saw this topic was relevant, figured I would give it a shot to see if anyone could assist me.

I have since figured it out. Needed the Stator and Rotor. Hooked it up, works like new.
