1976 Honda GL1000

I used to pull my guts out trying, once you know the trick it is easy as shit. Hoosier posted a Youtube on it. you stand next to the wing, put right foot on the tang, left hand on bar, right hand back on grab rail by rear fender, put stand down and rock bike to make sure both feet are on the ground at the same time, then stand on the tang and pull up on rear and it just pops on slick as shit. If I can find the link to the vid I will post it but I think Hoosier has is saved.

Yeah, that's why mine wasn't on the center stand. It takes three men and a boy to get it up on there.

Can't remember if this is the same vid but here you go.

Huh... wonder where that video went? If I remember right it was a young female doing it to show how easy it is. Now I can't find it or my post that had it.
Yes, if you are trying to do it straddling the bike you will rip your arms out of their sockets... ::)
Here is the original one that taught me and it's even a full dresser 1800.

YES

Thanks guys, that was kind of embarrassingly easy

I felt the same way. I used to have to ask for help at fuel stops when doing trips solo. After learning the trick I use the center stand all the time lol

Well damn. I just got schooled by one of the Cosby kids and called a pre-pubescent male.

Well now I'm a bit confused. I pulled the carbs, found one sticking float needle and adjusted float height on a couple of others. Now it just won't run. I can get it to start but if I put the choke on it runs almost 4,000 RPM and if I turn the choke off it dies.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Did you pull the aluminum intake runners with the carb rack? There are o-rings under their flanges that seal to the head, maybe the o-ring is old and brittle or rolled on re-install. The other end of the intake runner has a rubber boot that clamps to the carb throat. It has a little tit that engauges a locating slot to get the angle right and are not interchangable front to back. Also check that clamp (4) isn't loose.

Intake runners came off with the rack and I replaced the o-rings between them and the heads but I didn't detach them from the carbs. I will try tightening the clamps between the runners and the carbs.

Should be good then, maybe spray some carb cleaner around the joints and look for an RPM change.

So, I've also noticed that my petcock leaks a little and theirs a slight drip from the hose that runs from the petcock to the fuel pump right where it connects to the fuel pump. I've already got a petcock rebuild kit and I'm going to go buy some hose to replace the leaking one, just hadn't gotten around to it yet because I wanted to get it running first. Could a small fuel leak affect it very much? Air in the lines perhaps?

Couldn't see if there was fuel in the plenum last night, it was too dark in the shed. I'll get back at it in the morning.

the fuel pump sucking air can cause weird running issues

i always just run it out of my test tank and see if it runs any better fast test

Do you still see fuel in the plenum? There are fuel rails in it that are sealed with odd rubber gaskets. Randakk has those, too. My '75 engine was a bit worse, but it is in the corner to be a winter project, and the frame hanging from the garage ceiling letting the paint cure. It might save a lot of in-and-out to hook up the carbs to a fuel supply and check for leaks before re-mounting them.

Put some more gas in it. Replaced fuel line and added a fuel filter, just a chepo one for now. Rebuilt petcock. Pretty much same sypmtoms. Had the fuel filter installed backward for a minute and couldn't get it to crank at all but I noticed some specks of schmutz in the filter. Wonder if the carbs sucked up enough trash to clog them again? Also looking down in the plenum when it runs I see some fuel start to spray from one side across to the other.
