1979 CB650 Brat. -New photos

Here's my latest build -'79 CB650 (tank is off an '81) Bought two years ago not running, ended up just being a matter of cleaning the carbs out properly and fired right up. After that I Stripped the bike and altered the frame a bit to accept the new tank and eBay seat, made sure I could tuck most of the electronics out of the way, built a battery box, painted pretty much everything that could be painted, rebuilt/rejetted the carbs and added the stacks, as well as rebuilt the forks, lowered them 1.5" and added knock off emulators. This winter I plan on adding 14" ikon rear shocks, GM HEI ignition conversion and a clutch that hopefully won't slip as well as tires that will stick to the road a little better. Thanks for looking. Wow....That thing is a beauty! Really impressive work. Couple of questions, is that a generic chinese ebay seat? How did you get your carbs so clean?

Thanks man! It is a generic eBay seat. This winter I will probably stuff a gel pad in there and add a small amount of padding as well as get it re-upholstered with higher quality materials but for now it's better than a plank of wood. I had the carbs ultrasonic cleaned, but I also painted them before reassembling.

Where are you getting parts from? I am on a 650 build but missing one new piston.

So far I haven't had to dig into the engine, luckily as it sat for 14 years. But between dime city, siriusconinc and my local Honda dealership (Valve seals and misc engine seals have been surprisingly cheap there) is where I've gotten everything. If I end up tearing the engine apart it will be getting a dynoman "big" bore kit.

Thank you, I did all the paint and metal work myself, except bending the rear hoop as I don't have a tubing bender (or place to put one) yet

Here's version 2.0. This winter after testing compression and getting 60psi on 2 cylinders I decided to rebuild the engine and make some other improvements, it got:

Dynoman 10.5:1 cr 674 big bore kit, mike rieck stage 2 ported head with 550 valvetrain/kibblewhite springs (so I can throw a monster cb550 cam/hardweld rockers in this winter) gm hei ignition modules powering dyna .5 ohm coils, motogadget m-unit, turn signals, hagon 2810 shocks, tires that stick to the road, cone engineering muffler and a better quality seat upholstered locally (made the pan myself from fiberglass) amongst other things

Thanks man, I've been doing custom paint for roughly 5 years now. This was just a quick job as i have a lot on the go for other folks but I'm happy with the outcome.

Beautiful bike. I think the new tyres are much better, nobblies on a road bike ???. I like your bike a lot but for me, a small front fender and some holes in front disc would make even better looking. hey just my opinion, great bike as is, enjoy it. ;)

Thanks man, yeah I agree the knobby tires just didn't feel or look right to me on this bike. It may get a fender in the future if I can find something half decent, but I'm thinking of swapping the forks out in favor of something updated with better brakes so I might wait until then to address that.

Subscribed, very cool looking bike I hope to get as professional looking finish with my 79 cb650z project. Did you keep the original rear mudguard or buy an aftermarket one and modify it?

Thanks. I kept the factory rear fender, filled all the holes and recessed it so it tucks into the frame hoop a bit

Decided to take a few close up photos of the paint and such. For anyone wondering the bike is based in UPS brown, and has gold pearl sprayed over black on the sides of the tank and some of the engine covers as well as hand spun copper leafing. Engine and wheels are sprayed in tamco epoxy primer and so far everything is holding up great. Frame and lower forks are also sprayed in tamco black basecoat and hi-impact clear, however I don't think I'll be using that particular clear again. I've dealt with more durable clear coats that don't have the "Hi-impact" label. Also figured I'd post some photos of my hand painted m-switches, done with gold 1shot. (if you look closely at the last photo you'll be able to see the rear turn signals mounted on the upper shock studs, for the brackets I just shaped some aluminum angle the old fashioned way with a grinder/hand file as I'm not quite as equipped as some of the more established bike builders on here, but it does the trick. Front signals just wrap around the fork tubes right under the top tree.)
