1979 DT100 Cafe build!

Well, I have been walking by the seat mold for a couple weeks now and just didn't like it. So, I shaved it down more last night. I will scrap the old style battery and go with a smaller gel battery that I can place in any position.

Your booth is way better than mine. Even a decent extraction fan on yours!

Good luck with the painting.

If you want a cheap performance mod the mx100 top end is aluminum and makes more power.

Aftermarket yz80 pipes can be easily modified to fit and will help make even more power. Compliment this with a 26mm yz80 carb.

Very cool build, forgive the "more power" suggestions, it's a bad habit that I really don't want to quit.

Thank you! I won't be turning out any show pieces, but it works! ;D

Thank you for the info! I will give it some research time!

Nice wheel job. What rims did you use?

I used the factory wheels. I took a factory 16" rear wheel and had it laced with the front wheel hub so I can go 16" front and rear.

So I am finding that taking pics in my basement with black isn't turning out so great. I guess it will look sweet when it hits the sun for the first time in the Spring!

Mocked up the forks for a look!

For those who are following my build I need a hand!!!!!

So I am in the process of my first cafe racer build and need help with my tire sizes. The bike was a 1979 yamaha DT100 enduro in it's past life. I had a 3.00-16 on/off on the rear and a 2.75-18" in the front. I will be going 16" both front and rear. It looks like a 3.00-16" will be as big as I can go in the front giving me about 5mm on each side of the tire to the forks to spare. I may be able to go 4" in the rear. Should I just go with 3.00 front and rear? Do I keep the enduro tread or go with a street tread? Moped tire? Do you know of any different sizing to get me the 3.00"?

You can't add an inch to your rear tire without putting on a wider rim. Big tire on small rim will pinch it and mess with the tread pattern. If you're only going to ride it on the street, there's no reason for an enduro tread outside of looks. If you plan on actually riding off of the street, then enduro tires are fine I'd imagine. I believe 90/90-16 would be equivalent to the 3.00. Not sure how many of those you'll find though.

Why on earth would you want wider tires on a tiny bike, it hurts several areas of performance!

Enduro tires are HEAVY.

Rotating mass is a critical factor when considering the performance of a small displacement bike.

That's why I asked fellas! :D I only said the enduro tire because I had a brand new one come with the bike. I have them up for sale just have not sold them yet. With that said, I will stay with the 3.0-16. Now, just to find one. Can I use the moped tire?

Probably. I know Michelin Gazelles are popular on smaller bikes. I have a set on my 125 project but it hasn't had a real ride yet so no reports on handling. I've heard mostly good things about them though.
Go on bikebandit.com and search for 3.00-16 and 90/90-16 tires and see what's out there. You might be able to find them a little cheaper somewhere else if you spend some time, but generally they have pretty much every option at the lowest price.

Scooter tires will work just fine. Lots of them are at least "P" speed rated for 93 mph, but beware of "J" rated tires, they will not be nearly as safe for your application.

These might work for you.

Also check out the michelin city somethin er nother.

Stop looking for 90/90-16's they dont exist in a street tread.

And why are you going to a 16" front? It's going to mess everything up because the bike is built to run an 18.
