1979 Goldwing Muscle bike

I work at Lossa Engineering, and every few months I get to build a personal bike just for me.

This is a bike I built out of a 1979 GL1000 goldwing.

I played to the bikes strengths, It's a huge displacement, absolutely ridiculous bike in every way. truly the first "Muscle bike" I had a lot of inspiration from muscle cars and race vehicles of the 1960s. The goldwing packed a lot of technology and motorcycle firsts into one awesome bike, and it was made purely as a technological showcase. it was only a few years after it was released that the market dictated it go in a full-dress, touring direction. so the early goldwings are really amazing bikes, considering the entire design concept was to "one-up" the success of their CB750.

my goal was to create a bike that embodied the spirit of muscle cars, "affordable, simple, fun" maybe they can't outrun a Ferrari around a track but they sure as heck move between stoplights and THATS where you drive 99% of the time. The goldwing is a lot of weight to toss around in a corner, and a lot of bike overall, but damn is it fun to launch off the line, and it sure as hell is intimidating to stand next to.

I built this bike almost a year ago, I have since sold it to a new owner, but I get it back in my possession every so often to do some maintenance and take it on a good long ride.

I have since realized, after taking it to MANY car and bike shows, that "motorcycle people" really dislike it. most people cannot get out of the notion of "cafe racers" and automatically hate goldwings for being big, heavy, overall too much bike. The actual fact of the matter is that this is NOT a "cafe racer" goldwing. it is a MUSCLE BIKE, through and through. When you look at it from the perspective of it being the motorcycle equivalent of the Mustang or Shelby Cobra, it makes more sense.

When I take it to CAR shows, the people there IMMEDIATELY see my intention and they love the style. It's a pretty great feeling. I wish the motorcycle guys were not so closed-minded about the styling and immediately reject it if it does not fit their idea of a "cafe racer" its not a cafe. get over it. haha.

Nothing wrong with using a goldwing for something other than a cruiser. Very well done piece of machinery there.

How much weight did it end up at?

Other people can call it whatever they want, it's an awesome bike! Labels shouldn't matter, as aggravating as they are, build what you like and leave the pigeon hole-ing to them.

Well done, I'd rock a stripped out 'Wing any day.

I posted in here and it is gone? Weird. Love the bike and Frogman, First gen GL's never were cruisers. It took 2 more model re-do's for honda to make them sofa's on wheels. My GL is almost stock and is not a cruiser, I wouldn't ride it if it was, I hate cruiser ergo's. It is a large standard or JDM and is fun as hell to ride.

This one just takes what Honda intented and ups it to the next level!

I should add that I was forced to build this bike on an extreme budget.

all in all, I'm into the bike maybe 1400 bucks including purchasing and registering it.

as far as weight drop, i lost the 50 pound stock exhaust system but the tail weighs about the same as the fender it replaced, and the fairing and subframe weigh about as much as the tach and giant handlebars it lost. the fairing is just an EMGO Viper fairing becuase I couldnt afford a nice airtech one, and the subframe holding it is made out of 1/4 steel rod welded together.

the paint is all Duplicolor, thats why the gloss isnt as glossy as a pro job. I could have wet sanded and polished more but I was happy with it at the time and I was riding it and getting it dirty way too often to keep it perfectly clean

even with as little as I spent I was still able to rebuild the motor with fresh gaskets, add a new high performance clutch, all new cables, new tires, etc.

The motor is all stock except for GL1100 carbs, jetting, K&N Air filter, DYNA DS1-3 electronic ignition, I have early GL cams in it that produce more top end power.

I kept it within stock specs so it would be reliable for years. Too many times we build a crazy high performance motor and it just becomes totally un-streetable. Pure race bikes are awesome, but they are almost undrivable on the street.

the front rim is an 18 inch rim from a GL1100, I ditched the stock 19 becuase it was huge and terrible.
