I work at Lossa Engineering, and every few months I get to build a personal bike just for me.
This is a bike I built out of a 1979 GL1000 goldwing.
I played to the bikes strengths, It's a huge displacement, absolutely ridiculous bike in every way. truly the first "Muscle bike" I had a lot of inspiration from muscle cars and race vehicles of the 1960s. The goldwing packed a lot of technology and motorcycle firsts into one awesome bike, and it was made purely as a technological showcase. it was only a few years after it was released that the market dictated it go in a full-dress, touring direction. so the early goldwings are really amazing bikes, considering the entire design concept was to "one-up" the success of their CB750.
my goal was to create a bike that embodied the spirit of muscle cars, "affordable, simple, fun" maybe they can't outrun a Ferrari around a track but they sure as heck move between stoplights and THATS where you drive 99% of the time. The goldwing is a lot of weight to toss around in a corner, and a lot of bike overall, but damn is it fun to launch off the line, and it sure as hell is intimidating to stand next to.
I built this bike almost a year ago, I have since sold it to a new owner, but I get it back in my possession every so often to do some maintenance and take it on a good long ride.
I have since realized, after taking it to MANY car and bike shows, that "motorcycle people" really dislike it. most people cannot get out of the notion of "cafe racers" and automatically hate goldwings for being big, heavy, overall too much bike. The actual fact of the matter is that this is NOT a "cafe racer" goldwing. it is a MUSCLE BIKE, through and through. When you look at it from the perspective of it being the motorcycle equivalent of the Mustang or Shelby Cobra, it makes more sense.
When I take it to CAR shows, the people there IMMEDIATELY see my intention and they love the style. It's a pretty great feeling. I wish the motorcycle guys were not so closed-minded about the styling and immediately reject it if it does not fit their idea of a "cafe racer" its not a cafe. get over it. haha.
