So here goes...................
I was looking for a project bike to tinker with over the winter. I have always loved the idea of having an older bike (with no payments), something I could put my stamp on and due the work myself.
The bike: 1979 Honda cb650z in good working order except for the carbs, lol
* I picked this bike up real cheap ($400) with a spare (no papers) parts bike. The PO said he rebuilt the top end, new chain / sprocket, brakes but never got to the carbs. They are not running the greatest right now. Rest of the bike rides pretty good considering its 35+ years old.
The plans: my vision is a pretty straight forward café style build starting with a steel / leather seat. For now I just want the bike to run well and breath a little better so a full carb rebuild will be done with higher jetting, velocity stacks and 4 into 1. Maybe after a season of driving I will build that spare engine or maybe I'll want a different bike.
I really like the vintage look so I am going to try to keep things natural, raw steel tank / seat with clear coat maybe. I know its been done before but hasn't it all been done. Going to try and keep the chrome to a minimum. Going with aluminum spoke wheels instead of the Comstars again just trying to keep that vintage look.
I started with de-cluttering the bike and removing the battery and airbox, gigantic lights. Battery will be tucked up under the seat. I cut the rear frame section and placed my seat on for mock up. Not sure what to due with the front fender I kinda like the look of the full fender with the struts, gives it more of a vintage look. I've added a set of clip ons. Probably going to lower the front end a touch when I get to rebuilding it.
Well that's what I have for now, I'll be adding more as I get time to work on her.
