Well I just picked up this CB650 for $150 bucks thats been sitting for 10+ years I have hopes of making this into a cafe racer after i sort out the mechanical. But I need some advice. What would need to be addressed before I even try and crank this thing over to do a compression test? This is supposed to be a running but has no key or title but is really complete minis some badges. Can I get my local honda Shop to make me a key cheeper than it would be to buy a new ign switch? Also does anyone know where I can DL a FSM?

Well I haven't even started into this yet but I won half the battle! The guy that I bought it from got a title for me and the engine turned over when I pushed it in gear!!!
So far it will need
-clutch work
-cables (they all seam to be seized)
-brake work
-fork seals
-tires
-battery
-key/ign switch
-paint powdercoat (later!)
-clipons B-)
-reasets?
-carbs gone through
-hours upon hours of love

Well I made some headway tonight and got the carbs off. I snapped a couple pictures but the one thing that has me worried I forgot to take a picture of. The what looks to the CDI ignition boxes have over heated and the epoxy that protects the circuits has melted onto the plate its mounted to. Does this mean they are toast?

Yuuuup... Unfortunately yea... It will still start up but once enough current passes through them it will start to heat up and disrupt the circuit and stall the bike... If u keep using them they could eventually catch fire and damage more wires an stuff. As from what I've seen with other ppls bikes.

That is what I was wondering. I saw a GM HEI swap on another fourm that I'll try when I get to that stage but ill run with them for now unless they won't work at all. I started in on the carbs this morning and got them pretty clean but I twisted off one of the heads on the needles on the engine side of the carb I think its a pilot jet... Anyone have one laying around? These carbs have been sitting for a long time there was a ton of gum and gunk in there but I used comet toilet bowl cleaner and let the cleaner set for a couple min and hit the bowls with carb cleaner and it got all the gunk out!

Well after spending all day in this little shed. She RUNS!!!! :D I had to hotwire the ignition with a alligator clip though. I also did a compression check.

I'm not quite sure what to do about number 3 I added some oil in the cylinder and retested and got about 115. Could it be a valve thats not closing all the way or am I looking at rings?
The last picture is just of my makeshift gas tank from an old lawn mower because the one that came with the bike is locked and i dont have a key :(

This may be a no brainer but check ebay for parts. I was fixing up a Honda Rebel and I found a whole key set (ignition, gas cap, fork lock and helmet lock) with two keys for like $30. I'm pretty sure they were made in China or something but the chrome was nice and shiny and they work.

So I'm having trouble getting the clutch cover off....Any ideas? And should I do clipons and drop the front or clubmans? I've been ordering parts to at the very least get her back on the road again. Also I need a brake master resivor can I just find one from another bike and plumb it in?

Cool Project I may be trading a wood stove for one of these with no title or key...What are your plans with the DT tank? Any master reservoir should work ...Clip ons are expensive unless you make them yourself but they are very adjustable clubmans limit you a little but for $30 are a good buy....Whats hanging you up on the clutch cover?

Thanks for the fast reply. I think ill keep the tank because it has no dings or dents but id like to get one of the older non tear drop tanks. I found some fleabay clip ons for $63 but didn't buy yet because I wanted to find some reviews. On the clutch cover I think it was just the gasket really sticking but I couldn't get it to pop.

Yea I noticed the DT tank because I just Picked one up(check it out)....Dime City Has Awesome Clip Ons for $70(Great fast service too) After putting them on your bike your glad you have them...If the Clutch cover bolts are all loose try a rubber mallet to get it to PoP off

Looks sick man but your DT tank pic is thumb nail size and I can really see it lol. I had a chance to pick up a whole DT for free... I just took the tank for my xl250 but wasnt able to get it to fit. If you need the tank just let me know man I dont have a use for it and ive been trying to get rid of some of my stuff casue I'm going off to college in the fall. As for the CB650 I'm waiting on parts so I've been polishing on the left side of the bike.

Oh for the clutch cover... Aside from the gasket it has 2 locating dowels that have a tight fit so wiggling it won't do much.. U need to tap all sides with some gusto with a soft rubber headed mallet.... After some tapping it will pop out. 8)

I got the clutch cover off by a little prodding with a screw driver because i'd been using a rubber mallet from the start and it wasn't loosening things up in the least bit.

It seams like this ole' CB650 was a poor mans Harley it has tassels and these Harley front pegs! Think they are worth anything? Now I'm turning it into a poor mans cafe racer. The rest of the pictures are just prof of the hours and hours I've spent sanding on the aluminum bits.

Don't feel bad, my CB750 had a sissy bar, highway bars, and a big rear rack when I got it. That stuff came off the very first day, haha.
