1980 CM400T... first bike

Haha, that carpet is literally EXACTLY like the wall paper I had in the kitchen when I purchased my house... the first thing I did was RIP IT ALLLLL DOWN! then enjoy a beer while surrounded by tiny bits and pieces of the 60's (the wall paper) shredded all around.

Nice rear sets (maybe give a link to the ebay store?) but I gotta say that is some of the most hideous carpet I have ever seen! ;D

You've made some good progress, but I'm a little concerned about that unmounted top hole in the rearset. I don't think it poses any serious problems, per se, but you'll want to be careful to not catch your pant leg or something on that. If you're pulling up to a stop light and intend to lean on that leg, it could be a problem if your pant leg catches and you're not able to get your foot down in time. It may not be an issue at all....

Sounds like something I'd do. You don't want to be like me.

You know I wouldn't have even thought of the rearsets catching my pants or shoes. Originally I was going to chop them down for a cleaner look, but I didn't want to "ruin" my new rearsets.

Do you think I should just trim them? It definitely makes sense.

Hey go easy on the carpet in The Barn... It is a good place to spill oil and beer :)

It's not ruining them, it's modifying them.

I don't claim to be an engineer in any way, but I don't see it doing you any good right now anyway. I'd probably cut it, grind it smooth and repaint it.

There are a lot of people here a lot smarter than me, but I trust they'll chime in if they disagree.

FTR: I dig the barn.

Those Asian knock-off rearsets are not over-engineered by ANY degree (they flex even when they are properly mounted - I have a set on my ZX9).

I would recommend you either find a way to mount the sets with the 2 mounting points, or take off the mounting bracket and make up your own from some steel plate. The way you have it mounted now is.....questionable.

Noted. I am using 2 mounting points. One on the aluminum block to hold the position of it, and one using the passenger peg mount (pretty large hardware). As you can see the bolt on the peg hardware is holding the weight of the rider as it was before I put the new rearsets on.

Like I said, the mounting point is very close to the peg, creating a lot less leverage on the mounting plate than it would if I used the 2 "proper" mounting holes. The flex is in the new peg mounting bolt. I am going to set it up, and I will let you know about my success/failure.

Can anyone answer my question about the grade 12 bolt?

I can't answer your question about the bolt. I've never tried something similar. Hillsy has a good point though.

If you're dead set on using those rearsets, I bet you could cut that top mounting hole off, do some cutting and grinding and reweld it in a different position. A mount would need to be welded to the frame in the right place, but it solves your problem. So long as you can do it without compromising the structural integrity of the rearset, which I'm not experienced enough to judge. I'd still be conscious of your pant leg when putting your foot down, but this should at least help with that a bit, as it wouldn't be quite so "out there".

Something like this....Forgive the poor quality.

Does anyone know where i can buy the threaded ball joints on their own? these are really short, but i dont want to buy a new kit.

I did a 1980 cm400t as well.

You can get parts for the linkages at http://www.midwestcontrol.com/.

Also if you get into any trouble re-jetting, let me know. Mine runs pretty damn good with pods and new pipes. Ive still got some jets and other stuff as well left over from the build. Let me know if you need any and I;ll sell em off cheap!

I like simple. I'd cut off that bracket behind the frame tube and re-attach it just below the swinagrm. Then I'd use the pegs and levers from that rearset kit and throw away the brackets. Bolt teh pegs in to teh moved brackets and you are good to go.

Wait which bracket are you referring to?

Ok I mounted them up. I'll post pics later.

With everything loctited and secured, the rearsets look good and are solid. I am 100% confident on the mounting points and pretty satisfied with my leg position. I just need to hook up a return spring for a little better feel.

I am going to use this configuration I have been trying. Now I will have to figure out the linkage for the shifter. Probably just going to cut down the stock shift arm and drill a hole through it.

Hey bike looks great. Just a heads up on those rear sets. I have the same set and am looking to replace them asap. They are very weak, and really dangerous to use for the brake side. You can actually bend them by hand if you try. The rod ends that are included are actually two pieces on the shift linkage. The rod will pull out of the eye part over time. I'm just passing this info along after dealing with the nightmare of riding with these lol.

Well that's just great... :/

I have found through building my bike that the Chinese are great at engineering ways to make things cheaper/crappier lol. If you can make some replacement arms and get some new rod ends you can keep the setup. That's the route I plan on going.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I am going to get on that. New rod ends for sure, new hardware for the peg. That should prevent(or delay) failure. I gotta make them work or I'm out $85!

New rod ends are in the mail. Thanks Losmanja for the link to buy them. I have also been replacing the hardware with grade 12 bolts. The rearsets feel great.
the brake side.

again... totally confident with the mounting points and with the new hardware.

rearsets are done...

I replaced the hardware with LONGER grade 12.9 bolts, and replaced the heim joints (from MW control) on the linkage. They are MUCH stiffer than before and fit well. My one problem is that the angle of the brake lever is odd as i need to make sure it doesn't hit the exhaust. I chopped down the rod and welded a new eye on it so it works well.

Also do you remember my nightmare of a seat modification? Well a holiday bonus for work inspired me to buy a complete seat. My present to myself, and it saved me some headaches.
