1980 CM400t/First Bike

Yeah, until you hold a lithium battery in your hand (Ballistic, Shorai or otherwise) you really don't get an appreciation for just how small and light they are compared to standard ones.

The seat pan is now welded and all welds ground down and a hole cut to mount it. Shock mount tabs built but one was built backwards and so both are removed again. :-\ We tried to remount the gauges , but I bought bolts that were too short. I'm ready for pods, and a rejet. I have read every post on the internet about how shitty this is gunna be but I'm gunna try to get these cv style to work before dropping $360 on mikuni vm30 kit. From what I've read I need 54mm pods and for jets: 78-85 mains and 130-138 secondaries. Can anyone chime in here with the right sizes? My metal master will be building a two into 1 out of stock headder.

I'm on my 2nd CM400,I ran pods and pretty open exhausts on both of them,2nd completely open.It should start and idle fine if so bump your main jet to a 120.If it has 112"s you should be good if you have 118"s then you will need to put a shim under the needle. the cv carbs on the bikes work really good if they are clean and all the diaphragms are good. Heres a pic of my first one that was stolen 3 weeks on the road. Hope it may give you some ideas. Looking good.

All I can say is WOW! You really got to the heart of what makes these things ugly. An choped it off! We talked alot about getting rid of the rear hoops. I just thought leaving them for shock mounts would be best.... I guess not ;)

Thanks man,if you cut a couple of inches back from the backbone and at the bottom of the hoops you can slug in your new pieces. then all the ugly is gone. Hope the pics helped you out.

oldskool and Tattooguy. When I started my CM build (I am embarassed to say) 3 1/2 years ago there weren't any quility builds out there on a CM they were laughed at and Sh*t on. You both have done a great deal to raise the game and hopefully respect for the CM/CB400 T. Well into my build I came to the I should have cut off the "Ugly" and built from scratch but was already so far along with my approach to the challenges.

In many ways the challenges these bikes present force some very unique solutions and thus unique cafe bikes.

I was just looking back at your thread and saw your post about making a 2 into one exhaust. I am not sure how far along you are or if you have discovered this, but If you flip the Head Pipes from side to side it re routes them in and under the frame and basically can be put side by side at their outlet. Easy collector there. I think I would try this If I was to do another. Along with a new Rear Sub Frame I'd route it through the frame and exiting in the tail.

Thanks Frank,if you look close on the green one the exhaust X's under the seat and exits on both sides of the tail.

Just go for it,chop it off ,take your time, and you'll never regret it.

Well maybe in the future. She stands on her own once again. Still working out rear sets, and conecting header, need them pods, and rejet,, and a taillight.

Ok two more days and nothing to show. Just a lot of polishing. Front forks off. Gunna bob the front fender. If I wanted to drain my forks... Will there be alot of pressure when I pull the cap? Hopeing to get seat hoop bent tomorrow. Any tips on not getting flat spots or dimples?

take the weight off the front forks and you wont have a problem.
