I just picked up a new daily driver that I'm planning on slowly modifying to a cafe racer style bike. I'm not sure how in depth I will be able to go, considering that I use this bike to get to work and back every day, but I love how many projects are on this forum that provide tons of inspiration. I'll update it as I go. So far I've ordered a set of 2.5 inch speedo and tach gauges, a clubman style bar, and some k&n style air filters to start. I've seen a couple people on here change their battery to a smaller more cylindrical style that can be easier to hide. Anyone know a good place to order one of these?

Obviously the first change will be to remove the grenade decal that the previous owner added.

Looks to be in pretty good shape, shouldn't take too much work. Good luck with it! Just an f.y.i., these bikes are notorious for not liking pod filters.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually ordered the k&n style cone filters. Will that make a difference? Or should I just not go that route at all? I'd really like to clear out the area behind the carbs, mostly for asthetics, but not at the expense of engine proformance.

I haven't tried the switch but pretty much everything I've read has said that the CM400 just doesn't perform well without the stock airbox. There have been a couple recent builds where they changed out the carbs and fit different filters. I'm not sure if the verdict is in yet on how they perform. Look around for yourself, there's been plenty of talk about it on here in the past about this bike and different air filters. The two that did the carb swap were Sin City Vintage Cycles and Frankenfe. Good luck. I'll be watching your thread, it's cool to see how these bikes get transformed in so many different ways from person to person.

Update

Clip ons
Wrapped pipes
Dime city headlamp bucket
Dime city gauges
Still a ton of work to do.
