1980 xv 500....neutral light issue.

I change the speedometer on my Virago , and now with the clutch sensor not hooked up the neutral light will come on in every gear except for neutral. Now when I hook the clutch sensor up the neutral light stays off but the bike will turn over in every gear without having the clutch engaged.
Not sure if anybody can help, but if you can please respond and also if somebody has a wiring diagram that's colored for this bike it would be greatly appreciated.

For the neutral light on the dash, one wire connects to a brown power wire and the other wire to the light blue neutral wire. The light blue wire should run directly to the neutral switch.

I have the sb wire to the light, however I used a dark blue wire to power the speedo...do I need to use the brown to power the speedo? Thanks for your help Sonreir

Dark blue is for the lighting circuit, so it may only work if the lights are turned on (not usually a problem on an 00s bike since the lights should be always on anyway). I prefer the brown, but it may not matter too much either way.

I hooked up the brown as the positive and I'm still having the same issue. I have a question I'm not very good at electrical is the sky blue wire a ground? Also I put an voltage reader on it and the blue gets voltage on every gear and none on neutral. I'm pretty good at motor work and designing bikes but when it comes to electrical I'm pretty stupid

Yes, light blue is a ground wire. The connection to ground should only occur when the bike is in neutral, though. That's how the light turns on and off. When grounded, the circuit is complete and the light comes on. When not grounded, the circuit is open and no power flows.

That makes perfect sense, I contacted the people I bought the speedometer from and I'm waiting to hear back. Now for the clutch sensor issue, when the clutch is out the sensor is making connection and when you push it in it disconnect. Is that correct or should it be the other way around?

I think it's meant to be the opposite? That way, you can run the starter motor when the clutch is in. You can skip it if you don't want it though.

Lol... I would love to but I'm building this bike to sell. I couldn't in good conscience do that to... this is what I got so far someone.
