1981 CB750K, Let's do this.

I was looking at dropping mine about 2" so I can mount my clipons above my tree. It looks like 2" is the max because any lower and the forks would come in to contact with the lower tree. I have a second bike to compare measurements too.

Yea garage, I have the same thought about punching the forks through and using clip ons on the top. But even when I was trying that the bike was still slanted towards the back. I suppose that means that I have to raise the rear end. The only way I know of doing that is larger rear forks.

So, it seems to me I have little options here, Punch the forks through 2'' and raise the rear, get different front forks that allow the front to go lower, or can you use the same forks, somehow cut them down then just crank up the air pressure/use much thicker fluid in them?

I think I should probably do the engine first. Anyone have any links/pointers to consider when rebuilding/cleaning it?

I'm also thinking that I am going to rattle can the paint job myself, frame and all. I have a compressor but its much to small for it to be effective. Any other ways to do it / any suggestions?

Thanks,
Etchasketch.

Pics will come late tonight as that's usually when i work on the bike :p

Look at Pistol's bike again and check out his swing arm. Simple mod. But, playing around with mine brought the chain very close to the swing arm pivot. I PM'd him about this, but he's never replied. My wheel swap to a 18" wheel did not work out. I bought an Avon tire and was shocked at how narrow it was. Mounted it anyway. Damn was it hard to mount a tubless tire on a tubed rim! Anyway, inflated tire still looked too narrow. So, back to the drawing board and will have to re-lace the original 19". Another setback in my DOHC project. Plan now shifts to the swing arm mod to raise the rear. At least I'm learning stuff from this build, eh?

Wheel was good on mine, look at my thread for sizes. You could use a teflon strip like moto-x bikes for the chain to slide on the swinger... I was also planning on some taller shocks too. I'm 6'3" and change, I like taller bikes.

Thank you thirsty!

I've hit a bit of a snag i think, Last night I was removed the valve cover, and i undid the bolts holding the inner bearing caps, But the caps wouldn't come off. My manual said to apply sideways pressure with the bolt still in a little bit. So I gently bumped it with a hammer sideways. It came off fine but the little threaded sleeves got bent. I can't get it back in. What should I do!?

Just went through your whole thread thirsty! WOW.

What did you use the clean the engine so well? I want to take my engine apart like that. But I don't want to fuck up bad enough that I can no longer use it. Or reassemble wrong and have it not run :( I guess that's part of the challenge. Everyone has a first time taking down an engine. I just hope mine goes smoothly cause I don't really have anyone to show me :/

It has a flat spot in it right? Make it round again.
Take a round something and put the dowel (right?) on your bench/floor/vice and pound it into it. This will straitend (Re-round it) out the flatend part of the dowel. File off the points that dont fit. Those dowels are for alignment of the caps and dont do anything besides that. If you've destoryed it already send me a PM and I'll mail you one. Just make it round again and stick it in their.

I used a glass bead machine at work to clean my cases. If your not comfortable taking an engine that far down you probrobly shouldn't . It's not thaat hard to do but if you fuck up than it's dust!
Does yours leak oil? Does it run good now? if bothare yes's than don't take it apart. Use brake cleen and simple green. Tooth brush for the small spot and a scrub brush for evrything else.
cheers thirsty

Thanks for the help. You're probably right. I think ill just apart the top end cause it's REALLY dirty and I want to further my knowledge/exprience. Ill sandblast the outside. The only leak is from the valve cover im pretty sure(ill order a new gasket). I left the dowel cause I wasnt sure what to do. Ill hammer out the flat spot later this week (work :( ). I also want to clean out the front sprocket area.

Great!! Thanks for the direction.

Alright. Progress. Here are some pics of what I've done.

After removing the cylinder head I found this laying on the pistons... Nasty!

REALLY need to clean this out! Simple Green and a toothbrush here i come!

NEW TOOLS!! Got all these for 2$!! My girlfriend came across a canadian tire gift card she didnt want and gave it to me. Super excited. They're great!

Tools still needed:
Dremel
Hack saw
Welder
Buffer
Bigger air compressor.

Cleaning off the pistons and their sleeves, I plan on using simple green and a toothbrush, Is this a bad idea for any reason?

Gonna take off the next layer soon!!!

Applied for a credit card today so I can order some clipon's and rearsets. I'm planning on getting the Cheapo chinese rearsets as seen on the product review section of this forum. Same goes for the Clip ons, there are a set in the prodecut treview section for fairly cheap.

I tried dropping the front end a little and mounting my clip ons above the tree. It looked dumb.

That crap probibaly fell in when you removed your cylinders, happened to me too.

Oil leak... Have a look at your cylinder case where the timing chain goes... If your tentioner was chewed up to nothing, your chain may have cut grooves in it. Again, Happened to me.

This is how she looks now. I'm sad that mounting the clip-ons above the trees looked stupid. What's your next plan?

Have you thought about welding new shock mounts to raise the rear?

Thanks for the oil leak tip. I'll check it out.

I put my clipons under my upper tree again.

If I cant get longer shocks, I will look more in to welding on new shock mounts to the shocks. Longer and beefer. The 1" wood is under the rear to simulate taller shocks stance wise.

I realize this complicates the handling but it is an option. You guy's could alway's drop the fork oil level enough to get the look you want. The fork tubes will ride lower in the legs achieving a dropped front end. This is basicly what I have done. The ride is a bit softer but jacking up the rear will IMO make the bike look like a motorcrosser. ??? Just a thought...

Yeah, Pistol's bike bears this out. And, he used a 19"rear hoop off a Triumph along with raising the rear. I haven't been as lucky and have yet to find a 19' chromed rim. I do not like the option of powder coating my rims to match. I like the chrome wheels.
