1982 GS450 L change of plans!

I think i am actually going to end up buying a Antigravity 8 cell or a Ballistic Evo2 4 cell, which should leave me much more room and reduce weight.

BTW what are your guy's opinions on the Ballistic VS. Antigravity lithium batterys? I have been told that the Ballistic batteries are much better at a ratio of 4:1. But i wanted to ask you guys because i figured a lot more people on here have used them.

Thanks.

I would rather go with a small 12v 6-7mAh AGM battery than a Ballistic or Antigravity. Just too many caveats with li-on batteries and bikes.

Yeah. A guy who has a handfull of CB360's and a CL350 here in town said the same thing. He said he likes the starting power but does not trust the Lith batteries.

So a 12V 6mAh battery should be big enough to kick over the GS450?

They do seem to be an inch smaller than a regular battery and definitely a few pounds lighter. I will have to see if the dirtbike shop here in town sells any.

So i think i found the right one i need for my application, and that will be easier to mount!

How about this one? This one looks good. Kinda sucks that it doesn't have a review but i haven't seen any bad reviews of the brand.

If your going kick only that battery will be fine. I don't worry to much as most batteries of that type are all made the same.

Problem is that the 82 GS450L's don't have a kick. Its electric start only and this doesn't have the right casing to ad a kick.... :/ So what would be the smallest battery to use for a electric start only?

There is a way to calculate what size battery you'll need, but I don't know it offhand. But unless you're cutting down your electrical draw all over the system, you'll need a battery close to the stock size (capacity wise, not dimensions). What's the stock amp hour, about 12? Even with a much lower current draw you'll probably get down to 10aH because of the necessary juice for the starter.

I can assure you though, the GS450 is pretty easy to bump start. If you kill the battery while riding it though, trying to bump start it will just give you a brain aneurism .......

Okay. Yeah, the lowest size battery i have seen on any site that says should fit an 82 GS450 is a 12V 10Ah with 120CCA. I will have to see if i can find one around the 10Ah-12Ah mark that is small, but the more amperage hours, the larger the batteries tend to be and its hard to find small ones with that kinda punch for starting power.

So i have been looking around a bit and cannot find anything for battery replacement so it looks like i will be keeping the original battery. :'( Only thing i could find that was of any decent size was only, in total, .35"(On Each side) smaller than my current battery. That is for a 12V 10Ah.. Which is not significantly small enough to worry about changing out with. I will just do my best to work around the current battery. Its gonna be a tight fit but i think i can get it to work!... Hopefully... >.>

You can use a 5aH or 7aH battery - I believe that Autozone and the like keep an AGM model in stock, which you can lay on its side.

I know that Sonreir runs a lamp battery like the one you pictured above on his CB360, and it's good for about a year.

Do you know if it has enough power to kick over a high compression GS450?
Well... That will at least last more than 6 months?

Sorry - only if there's a kick start. That you'll need a bigger battery

Cupid, have you looked at Shorai batteries? I bought one for my 650 project that was identical in capacity to stock, but was literally about 1/4 of the size (and weighed next to nothing compared to stock).

I have seen them, im just not keen to the Lithium batteries, but if i want a smaller batter, i might just have to get one. Thanks for the info though!

If it's any help (and just in case you're unaware): the Shorai is a lithium iron battery, not lithium ion. I read a lot of stories about people using L ion batteries and the horrors that ensued. The L iron batteries have been proving to be much better.

Hmmm. I did not notice that until you said something! Thanks for that. Im gonna research them a bit. Also, they are decently priced too!

A little update for you guys. Not the prettiest set up but its what i have to work with. I will eventually be coming up with something sleeker and prettier. But right now im trying to keep it low budget by reusing stuff in the garage or making my own stuff. So down the line, this stuff will be prettied up piece by piece as i get/make better parts.

Willing to hear any opinions if you have any. Do these look alright? If not, why? Just want some feed back/constructive criticism. If something looks wrong, don't be afraid to tell me. I'm still learning about bikes. I really know the basics for repair and customization(Replacement parts, repairs, Jetting, etc.), so I'm winging most of it at this point! :p

Maybe it's just the picture, but I think you brake linkage might have a problem. The linkage that attaches to knurled part might be too short to apply any useful leverage.
