This will be my first bike...picked it up today for $1000, not the best deal but everything is basically good to go (just a small oil leak) and I wanted a winter project so I snagged it.
It already has clubman bars but I dont really like them so may switch to drag soon.
First priority is sandblasting the tank, previous owner but a big skull sticker and a couple small tear stickers on the tank and clear coated over them. I am planning to go with a bare metal look anyway so its no biggie.
Anyway enough talk for now, going to go start stripping it down...heres a pic from today in its current state.

The wiring is all over the place on this thing and probably the part I know the least about. Im having a hard time figuring out what rip out and what to leave.
No manual :-\ ...Ive only taken off the turn signals and brake light so far and just taped them off and labeled them which is no biggie, not worried about that stuff. However I underestimated what all was crammed under the seat, Im not sure if Ill be able to move it all around and have to figure out where to relocate the battery.
Working on getting the old paint off now so I can hammer in knee indents and decide if I want to keep it bare metal or paint it. Will post pics of tanks soon.
Here is the current state...I am working on this tank which is a pain but I think it will turn out good after another long sanding session. I am also hammering out knee indents which I started on tonight to take a break from sanding.
Your knee dents are already starting to look more solid than mine. I'm pretty sure I ended up applying 7 coats of bondo to get it smoothed out enough. Do you plan on purchasing a cafe seat or building one yourself? The frame on these things makes it really easy to slap something flat on the back and call it a day 8)
Yeah this was my first go at it and was actually pretty surprised at how even and smooth the dents were. I was originally thinking I was going to try and go for the all bare metal look so I was being careful to not leave too many hammer marks, but now I think Im going to paint it so will also bondo before doing so.
As far as seat Im not 100% sure yet, I may do this deal unless I figure something else out. Ive never really messed with fiberglass so dont want to make my own really.
Going much slower than I would like but life is getting in the way a bit, hoping to bondo the tank and paint everything soon...then just waiting for parts. Will hopefully have a nice update soon!
Nice bike, I'll be watching your build. I had a 550L back in 90-91. First bike I rode to Deals Gap(AKA the Dragon). Talk about life getting in the way, had to sell to help with down payment on the house. Good luck on the build.
Thanks man! I hear you about the life part lol...same thing is delaying me a little now. However Im actually grabbing some new parts from Dime City right now!
Havent had enough time to finish sanding the tank down yet (taking forever) but finally getting some parts in and piecing things together. Hopefully will be able to finish sanding and bondo tank and can paint soon.
*Im also trying to decide if I want to paint the frame as well.
Just got in seat, drag bars, new clutch&brake levers, grips and new mirrors...that was about all I could afford to get at once lol.
