1982 Yamaha xj650 cafe-just about done!

Looks great!

You want to be able to see oil in your sight with the bike level.

I always stand to the right of the bike, hold the front brake and lean it over until level (or past level and then back).
You should have oil most of the way up the sight with a bubble on top.

Also you might want to consider lowering the gauges now that you have that big gap under the headlight.

I used a cutting disc to remove the welded bolts on the original bracket then bent it almost flat in the vice and re-installed on the bottom of the top clamp with new bolts and washers/nuts.

Check out the build page in my sig, we have the same bike, probably worth a browse.

Just an idea using a flat sheet metal bracket as replacements for axle and shock washers in a bracket out of the way.I alway find side state plates rattle and my leg always gets cut by the damn things in the way.....

A side mount in that area is in the works. The zip ties were just so I could get on it and ride without being hassled by the cops at every light.

I am def going to lower the gauges at some point. Now that the headlight is lowered they stick out like a sore thumb.
I read your build thread front to back when I first bought my bike. Nice job on the build! I wish i bought a tail like yours so I could have a bit more clearance between the tail and the tire...
