I don't know about good base for a cafe but you can cafe any bike with the right amount of work.

I had an 86 500. Idk if the bigger motors had the same issues, but I got my 500 for 400 and it lasted a year before the motor locked up.

Did you rebuild the motor or did it have a lot of miles on it?
