Decided to show my rolling project. In some reason couldn't come across VT500E/Ascot projects on this site and thought it might be interesting for some people. I bought this 'beauty' two years ago on Ebay for £120 as complete pile of crap and took a risk bringing back to life and converting into something nice. It went through different build stages and I will try to put everything in the sequence what's been done and what is happening right now.
I bought this bike in the dark as spares and knew that it's not in the best condition but when brought it to the day light I actually was.. a little bit disappointed.. But the positive part was that it looked like a proper challenge for a garage boy who earns less than minimum wage! Bike been left rotting under the trees for years and property where its been found changed few tenants so noone actually knew about it. It did not had any documents, keys. Even identification plate was half corroded.
Also after hot steam engine cleaning I definitely had to drop it from half a metre high and smash one rocker cover... Well good thing was I could take a look how the engine looks like from inside lol. And cranked it over using crowbar mangled in the drive shaft. It spun freely, engine oil looked reasonable, no water, germs, other weird bits was found in the oil and oil filter. So I was happy and ordered another rocker cover somewhere from Canada and shipped to uk for uhm like $20. Good thing was that Ive been working in a big car service and my boss let me to settle down in a dark corner surrounded by engines. So for a while I basically was living and working there.
Hunted down some nice fuel tank and bmw rear seat base. And by the time it arrived I sorted out small bits and pieces, refurbished radiator, brakes, cleaned and polished few aluminium bits. Also visited local recovery scrap yard where found more useful bits for my project. Had to modify frame to fit tank and rear seat. Sadly don't have pictures from the process..
I have never seen that model before, across the pond we have 500 Ascots, I owned one till last year when I sold it to put my kid back in college, nice build so far.
Some more history of the previous built:
The frame was ready quite quickly. However not with the best quality. Had to use bits and bobs I found lying around the shop floor. Resprayed engine and things went back on the frame. Bought Shadow 750 carbs because original ones were totally seized.
So some more pictures from the previous bike build. Trying not to get into small details because dont have a lot of pictures saved. Since I got the bike I relocated twice and living at previous premises was a bit hard to do any modifications due to lack of tools and equipment. The bike was done. For the time
Then I moved to a better place where I got own garage and sorted out tools. I wanted to show whole story since the bike buy till the final project which is.. starting again. The previous work did not satisfied proper bike build and I felt it was just a matter of time I will try to do it properly. Before I bodged bike with the parts I found lying around and not the style/type I want.
So the whole back was repiped and revelded. All rusty pipes were also replaced. Will be less unnecessary parts on the and its finally getting the actual shape
Its been a while I posted the progress here. Will roll back and will try to continue project story. All electrics are being hidden underneath the seat. There's not alot of space, especially with new snazzy and big battery but after few rearrangements things started to fit in.
