So, I have the chance to pick up a FZR-400.

What say you about this bike? Would it work alright as a commuter bike? Any known issues or reasons to stay away from it?

Let me know what you think...

Don't know much about it other than it's a nice light bike and the FZR600 motor is an easy swap. If the price is right I don't see a reason not to pick it up.

These are great bikes. I knew a guy who had one when I had my FZ 600. My motor was bored and tuned, but I bet stock he would have given me a nice little run for my money. They are light, quick for what they are, and sound great with opened up exhaust. I had many opportunities to ride that 400 and I'd pick one up in a heart beat if I had the chance and resources.

That good enough for ya? If the price is right, go buy it!

Light, fast, rev to 13,000 what's not to like and still one of the best handling bikes around. My GF has an ex race RFZR400 that we put back on the road and she loves it. It gets annoying riding along at 50 at 6000 revs but you get used to that.

The only downside is tat modern gas clogs the tiny carb drillings over winter and each year I have to strip and clean the carbs because I forget to drain them.

17" front wheel and 18" rear still works fine with decent tires available for both ends.

Not sure if it's a commuter bike though - depends on your local traffic conditions and how tall you are. I find the riding position uncomfortable on the street but it's perfect for my G/f. I need bard\s that are lower or taller, but that's a personal comfort thing and we are all different.

Biggest problem is that your commute will get longer and longer as you want to keep riding and don't want to go home just yet

Buy it and don't mess with it, that is a future classic if it isn't already. Old roommate had one, the bike was just about perfect. The old hot set up was 600 motor in that frame.

they are great bikes... upgrade the brakes ont hem with a YZF set up, basicly bolts right on... upgrade the rear shock wiht a GSXR 750... drop a tooth on the front sprocket... and rip away that sucker is a blast to ride... i built a FZR 600 last year... saw alot of info on the 400's on the forums i was on

good bike, thats whats on my avatar pic, well its a 400 with a 600 dropped in it.Right now its project #2 I've been working on the cb750.

good bikes! Pretty nimble with enough sack to get out of its own way. I was a bit cramped on it (6' 220lbs) but if it was taken care of by the prior owners and not messed with it would be a good short commute bike.
