1st build - "Dirty-Thirty" KZ440 LTD

Haha. Thanks man. Yea I am trying to get it ready for a ride next weekend. Time to widdle down that never ending list!!

So I'm working on getting this thing finished before the winter moves in and I have the strangest of problems. My stock throttle cable has some how become too short. I went from the tall, pull back bars down to clipons but it is still too short. Even when routing it as straight as possible it holds the butterflies open about a 1/4" which sends the engine into high RPMs every time I start it.

Any thoughts, suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Well it appears the motorcycle gods have smiled upon me... The other day I found an 82 GS450 online for a decent price but wasn't too sure about the deal as it was two hours away. But I decided to pick it up anyway. I wheeled and dealed and got the 82 GS450 AND an 82 KZ550 GPz for less than I paid for my KZ440.

The KZ runs but just needs a new battery and a deep clean. The GS is going to be a bit more of a project but will most likely run with a carb clean and a few whatnots. Now I have to get a bigger space to store the herd.

I will post pics tomorrow.

Ok, let's see. I finished my seat the other day...it looks good but I am going to redo it. I am not good at sewing and my wife's machine isn't strong enough to sew the fabric well. Pro job next time/season.

The seat is just sitting there. When it is attached it sits a bit lower/tighter to the frame.

Let me know what you guys think.

Here are a few pics of the KZ550 that I picked up the other day.

It runs all it needs is a battery and a front sprocket to be on the road.

Yup.

Haven't updated in a while. Got everything buttoned up on the 440, just waiting to rewire my controls. I am giving up on riding it this season and I'm going to rewire from the ground up this winter.

I have acquired four bikes since July. I am currently building the 440, a 82 GS450 for my bro-in-law and now I am building a 74 CB360 that I have fallen in love with. This winter season is going to be busy but exciting and frustrating I'm sure. I will be starting new threads at the end of the month after I move and do a bunch of other important junk.

do the stiching like the seat on that bike and it will look much better.

Danker, I would if I could but its hard to get professional results from a first time sewing machine user. I am going to get it prof. done sometime this winter.

awesome, are the tires shinko 712? did you use the size up 110 90 19? notice a difference?

Yep 712s. I can't remember the sizing but I'm pretty sure they are the same size that MB Co. used. I have only got to ride it up and down my street once but they felt great. Tearing it back down this winter so I won't be ably to report on that until spring.

Thanks fellas. Project has been put on hold for a while. Been busy moving and trying to get out of the military. Bleh.

I have four bikes that are all in various stages of dis-assembly and/or progress.

Hopefully I will be getting new throttle assembly, grips and getting all the new electronics done in the next month or two so I can start to tune the carbs. So much work to do.......

Well, It's been a long winter but yesterday I finally got to ride the piece for the first time. Let's just say it was a happy and sad moment. Motor runs really well and feels strong but the jetting is horrible. It idles and revs really well but once you get on it at about half throttle it falls flat on it's face. No power. No fun.

I need to get some new jets and start the fun process of tuning. I think it's running really rich but not sure. I will post up some pics and updates in the next few weeks once the weather gets nice... for anyone who cares.

Also, for anyone who is interested...
I have been building a GS450 for my bro-in-law over the last few months.
It pisses me off cause I like his bike better than mine. Haha. Here is a pic, more to come.

I think I might try to build a zuk next. Out of the late 70's, early 80's mags I like there the most.
