3 wire oil temp retrofit

anyone ever retrofit an electric oil temp sensor?

itll be on a 91 gsxr motor but im kinda just interested in what people have done on anything.

You looking for placement ideas or install/wiring help?

Install/wiring isn't too difficult, and I could probably talk ya through it.

i have no idea what you're talking about.

putting something like this

and this

on a motorcycle.

its totally doable, wiring should be easy. I was just wondering if anyone has done it or opinions on most useful temp sensor locations. obviously pre cooler is going to be hotter than post cooler, oil pan is an option too. mabe even on the head? but which reading will be most accurate to gauge the engines condition and that sort of thing.

Not sure if is the answer you want, but I would prefer to add an oil pressure gauge.

Rationale is if your engine dumps the oil your heat sensitive temp gauge will not show a problem.

If your engine dumps the oil your pressure gauge will show right away and you can kill the engine.

on an oil boiler im more worried about operating temps than pressure. in my experience by the time your oil pressure is noticeably dropping things have already gone pretty terrible.

ah ok, no sorry cant help. Dont think placement will do a lot of difference. When engine is hot, so is the oil and i don't think it will make a lot of difference because the oil travels pretty fast when riding. I mean, by the time it can cool down, its already in the hotseat again ;)

When we would add them to racecars, the consensus was put them in the pan. It's generally the easiest place to mount the sensor, it's where it's most likely to be submerged in the oil, and the reading you get from the pan is the temp of the oil getting ready to go back into the motor.

And your GSXR motor (and most others) will have a sensor already installed for low pressure that activates an "idiot light" on the dash. You can tap into that if you feel you need a low pressure indicator.
