5ivemoto barn to Grand Canyon build thread

Anybody have any experience with velocity stacks?

I figure if it's the same shity tune ability as pods ... Why not???

At least pods filter out some dirt. Unless you are riding in a race once a week, you will want a filter.

POWDERFINGER!!!!! you were right my pods were seated against the carbs too closely! Revs past 5 grand no problem! Big time thanks, I'd of pulled the engine apart before I went back and checked that.

Maybe it's time to lay off the garage whiskey

Still pops like a sumbitch but I think that's valves... Got my valve tool in yesterday gonna take the shims out and mic me see what I'm working with

Thanks again man

No problem, good to hear it was simple.

My 2 cents on your carbs would be if time and budget allows get some non vacuum carbs, they are much easier to tune because the slides are mechanically pulled so they do the same thing every time. Or run the airbox or some version of it for the ride you are planning, save the pods for around town.

What a detailed and informative build.

I'm 6'2" and I ride with cafe bars and stock pegs and my back never bothers me......

Crazy weekend in the garage. Basically a scramble to get things done with the clock ticking.

The xs360- so Beerson put in the MikesXS electronic ignition, the old one was working but for tuneability and reliability Beerson wanted the added insurance of new parts

We don't know if it was luck or skill or a combination but it went in and fired on the first kick

But we don't look gift horses in the mouth so we will take it

I'll go ahead and post his wiring diagram since everything seemed to work ok first try

Also he thermal wrapped his one off exhaust. The color on this wrap is awesome.

The cb160- well it runs... But it doesn't have the power it should and we knew the clutch was working but still not right...

We sourced the carbs from power barn and they pre jetted them with 95 mains. The bike would run on them but had no power in the mid range and presumably anything past that.

So after a call to power barn they said to jet up to the 100's they supplied. We did that and it was pretty obvious that was wrong. Wouldn't start. Tons of gas smell and the plugs were wet.

So we tried a few others and right now out best results are the 85 main jets. That's with pod filters and scrambler pipes with homemade baffles in them ( which sound surprisingly good )

And the clutch would work but the feel was wrong. We adjusted and adjusted the cable but it wasn't right.

Now I know allot of you guys will already know this but I'm gonna post it anyway in the hopes that it helps some idiot like me in the future

The first pic is the shaft that should be acted upon when you pull your clutch lever...

Ours wasn't being acted upon enough and we were trying to make adjustments to both ends of the clutch cable but that wasn't doing it

What we learned is that the real adjustment is done on the outside of the shift side case. The cable adjustment is basically a fine tune

This second pic is the large flathead that lets you make said adjustments...

The final pic is the set screw that lets you lock those adjustments in....

Yall all prob already knew this but some of us are less experienced so I posted it anyway

Nice progress man. Good info to post about the clutch adjustment too, not everyone knows.
Pipes on the XS look real nice. The 750 looks great too.
As far as the stacks on the 750, I agree stacks are the sexiest look, but they are definitely a pain to tune, and for a long ride, if it were me, I would at least want some kind of filter to keep shit from getting into my carbys.
Keep it comin' man!

Status update. As of last night all the bikes are running. Still allot to shake out but they run. Maybe some jet changes and cable adjustments. But the fact remains

As for the running the stacks I've seen guys at the race track use panty hose over them to keep the shit out ,could be a fix not sure if or how it would effect the tuning ? If it was me I would get some window screen and put it over the opening and the hose over that so the hose doesn't get sucked in ! Might work or might not just a thought lol

Alright. Status update.

The xs360- last night Bryson adjusted his valves and made some spacers for the filters. He was having idle issues and we think it is a few contributing factors. But the idle seemed vastly improved so. One or both of these things worked. He also got a hardware kit for the bike so we don't have to screw with each individual piece of hardware that wants to strip every time you touch it

Oh yeah and the carbs had a going thru....again

AND in order to get a dipstick that wasn't stripped or cross threaded he ordered an entire right side cover. I think it was cheaper than a NOS dipstick. Ha

The cb160- we've got it kicking well and starting with the 85 main jets in (but doesn't want to start off the starter with a hot battery) and it will rev freely and pretty high in neutral but when it's under load it just won't use the entire powerband- struggle street

We keep adjusting the clutch with different levels of success but it ain't right. So tonight we will pull the clutch side cover and clean and inspect the clutch and springs or sum bull

Also this engine was freshly rebuilt and had a valve job. But the thing smokes like it's got bad rings or guides. I dunno. So we will have a look at that too. See what's what.

So close and yet so far...

This is gonna be us on the trip...

The cb750-still afterfires but only under very specific conditions, partial throttle under load. Like starting off up a hill. I can make it never afterfires if I am more aggressive with the throttle. Engine seems happiest around 4-6 k. I think there is still some adjustment to made to the clutch and the valves are still not right. I think they're close but just not right.

I modified the pods in order to not block anything on the carbs. No luck. Went right back to the same problems (also afterfires allot more) not sure about that. So.....I'm a pretty crafty guy I work in a fab shop, I'm gonna try my hand at making velocity stack. Not the best idea I'm sure, but what isn't on this ol oven mit mōchine.

Oh yeah and I got an oil pressure guage I will be mounting as soon as I find the right fittings. British standard. Good call Honda..

And I made a little box to hold spare plugs and my jets and other misc bs

been a while since the last post but as you can imagine it's crunch time over here

Cb750 was running pretty good after a valve adjust but I got greedy trying to make it perfect and broke the tensioner bolt off on the front of the engine. Soooooo the engine had to come out. Stone cold hassle but I managed to extract it and all is well and back together.

Cb160 still swapping jets and moving the needles trying to get it to run correctly getting closer but still having it drop off over 1/4 throttle. Kinda stumped here but we're still swapping stuff out and trying to get it right

Xs360 is the only real success story of the last week. It's together and on the road and looking so damn sharp. There's allot more to say about it but it'll have to wait

Long story short two days before we left the cb160 jumped time and screwed us right in the eye....

But Beerson donated his grom to the cause so Jarod wouldn't be on foot.

And we embarked, and it's buetiful

That's awesome, I know most all of those locations you guys took pics of. Los Ojos bar, Jemez... good places man.

The roads out here the massive difference in topography is something to see. A couple hiccups today but nothing major. Yet. Well keep you guys posted. Just trying to get post out at gas ups and in this case repair stops.

Those last pics. We used to call that Baca Ranch. It went back to the state a few years ago. Giant caldera.
