Hey everybody! This is my first post. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to bikes, but i've been digging the cafe racer look for a while. I finally came across this beauty for $450 on craigslist and couldn't pass it up. I had problems with getting it running because I think the carbs are pretty much shot, but I did manage to ride it around for a little bit and it was a blast. I figured i'd make my first post a build post. Right now I have it stripped down to the frame and am about to get started on taking the tires and fork off to get ready for paint. Are there any tips to getting the fork off?

I might as well make a list of things I need and things I need to do

bars - I will probably be going with clubmans unless I can get some cheap clipons
throttle - probably going with a barnett dual
cables
controls - i'd like to find something simple with just lights/signals/cutoff
seat - I will be attempting to make this on my own with fiberglass
rearsets - homebrew possibly
wiring - I will rewire the whole bike
signals - I want to find some smaller turn signals to mount
brakes
brake light
clutch - Definitely need and will probably pick up the racing clutch springs
rebuild engine - Where can I find a rebuild kit?
tires
carbs -would these work? 24mm MIKUNI TM Flat Slide smoothbore carburetor
electronic ignition
new coil
sealed small battery

Definitely more I think i'll just add and remove what I need and have done.

Wow, that thing is a clean bike to start with! Check out this thread for a good reference: http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=12552.0

So let's see - clip-ons can be found from a couple places but they won't be as nearly as cheap as clubmans. Rebuild kits for engines? Usually it's just rings, gaskets, small stuff that you can find on ebay. I don't think I've ever seen a complete rebuild kit. Can't say anything about the Mikuni flat sides but a couple people have gone with the VM20's.

How about some more pics?

Sadly that is the only pic I have of it before I started tearing it apart. This will be pretty much a slow build, money is short. I still haven't decided on what colors i'm going with or even what to name the project. I was leaning towards bronze/black, but that seems too common.

Well, that paint on the tank looks perfect. I'd try to preserve that personally. And the name should come naturally...... in time

The picture is very flattering for the tank. It has a couple little dents and scratches I think its the original paint.

Update...well there is no update hah money has been slow coming in and i'm still waiting to order parts. Everyday I day dream of what it could look like finished.

is that a benz i see poking its nose out of your garage?
anyway i too must comment that the tank and overall bike looks execdingly good shape.
i say get some reg (non flatslide) mikunis from ebay, the cables and throttle you may need to get them working, a set of tires less than $100
sand the points, adjust the timing/tappets
buy a battery and just put it back together, ride the shit out of it and then you can save money for sweet clipons, a new tank and seat combo and i bet if you wanted to completely change the stock look you could almost get your purchase price back by slowly and carefully selling the original tank exhaust and other parts that are hard to find like perfect side covers and emblems.
anyway great find and have fun
welcome to the obession

Just occured to me - what parts are you looking for? I've got a couple bins full of stuff that I will never use. Might be able to work out some kind of deal.

That picture was taken at the PO's house and i'm not sure what it was. He dropped a 350 into it though. I will probably end up selling the side covers because I don't plan on using them, but everything else I will probably end up reusing. I was going to go with the flat sides, but i've decided the regular mikuni's will be fine as I can always upgrade later. The bike is already taken apart so i'd rather just paint it and get it over with. Since I have the engine out I will go ahead and rebuild it, new rings and gaskets.

I really appreciate it. I really don't have any parts yet to get this build done.
Well the main thing I need to do right now is rebuild the engine so I need rings and gaskets. The rear rim has a decent sized dent in it. Hand controls the old ones were fried. Chain, cables, throttle, points at least until I can upgrade the ignition. At this point i'd take anything I could use. I hate just looking at it sitting there.

Started tearing into the engine, but the old screws are stripping like crazy. I have to get an allen head kit I'm not sure what sized rings i'm going to need so I can't quite order it yet. I don't think the engine has been rebuilt before though.

Do you have an impact driver? If not, head to the nearest auto parts store and pick one up. I promise it'll be your new best friend.

There's a store on ebay called "Rusty Riders" from Ohio that has little stainless allen head sets for about $10. You probably won't use the longer ones, and there's not enough smaller ones, but they come in handy.

As far as the rings go, you're kinda on your own for now. Sorry!

Its been slow going, but I got some clubmans for her, ordered some gaskets, stripped almost down completely. I may just go budget build and rebuild the carbs, rattle can job. The brake shoes look like they have barely been used so i'll just reuse them. Still no set paint scheme, i'm thinking about just going flat or matte black all though I still love the bronze/flat or matte scheme. Does bateman still carry the electronic ignition for these old bikes? Also any advice on taking about the valve train, cam? I've never done it before so any help is appreciated. TIRES what do people put on these bikes? They look so damn tiny.

I am going to do a rattle can paint job how much further should I strip the frame? I just want to get it running and looking decent. I plan on doing a complete rebuild later all nuts and bolts.

I still haven't named the project, but i'm leaning towards Rinky Dink since well its a tiny bike and it will have limited funding.
