71 CL 350 Cafe
Just picked up my first bike last weekend for $20! Fell in love with cafes last year and I finally found a bike i can afford. My bike is being stored at my parents house for now (college student) but this week and next week i'll start working on it. Started ordering some parts to get started:
Missing left exhaust flange, bolts and gaskets for both (honda dealer
Petcock filter (honda dealer)
New coils, wires and caps (mikesxs)
New rectifier (oregon motorcycles)
clubman bars

here are some pics

You got that for 20 bucks? AWESOME!

Welcome aboard and hope the build goes well. Have a look around at some other builds, there is a lot of info here you could utilise to make this one champ bike. Be good to see how it turns out.

Cheers - boingk

Yep a Jackson sealed the deal - I went to help a friend load up his four-wheeler and I saw this in his dad's storage garage, never knew he had it. Went to his house - wrote his dad a check and we went back to the garage and loaded this baby up. Pretty unbelievable - still makes me smile.

if you are interested in saving cash on that rectifier you can make one yourself very easily with of the shelf parts from radio shack for between 5 and 15 dollars depending on if you have a 2 phase or three phase generatoralternator? and if you already have some spare wire and connectors.
just do a search on here or google "radio shack rectifier" or try the write up on sohc4 i did it and it has worked fine, i think it even charges a little better once i come off of idle

oh yea great score on the cl purchase, it is gonna be legal ?? have you looked into it because everybody says" it easy 100 bucks and you got a title" but i have had some headaches.

Did you get a title? If all I wanted was a 20 spot, I'd probably have just given it to ya.

Great score either way. You gonna be able to work on it at school, or is it a weekend project?

Should be fine with the title - MN has a form that the seller and buyer fill out if no title exists - plus if i need anything else i bought it from my friend's dad and he said he'd help out anyway he can to get it titled.

I bought a rectifier from Oregon Motorcycles and it was only $20. I'm not good with electric stuff (yet) and I just wanted to get it done with.

My man... $20 is a STEAL! Thats great! Any questions just ask away! Youll find more info than you'll ever need here.

I'll buy it off of ya for $40. ;DLOL ;D But seriously, great SCORE! Scrambler pipes rule.

I opened up the gauges on a CB550 (which look VERY similar) by cutting that ring with a dremel, then using a dab of JB weld to fix it back together when the new faces were in and needles painted. Just go easy so you dont cut through the ring into the case itself.

he guys im new too. little question relating a bit: which coils from mikesxs are you looking at? do they fit?

Finally got a chance to work on the bike - its been so damn nice can't hardly take it; i'm ready to get this baby going. Anyway, tore it down some.
Soaked the tank using CLR over night (couldn't believe how much rust and stuff came out, but the tank looks 1000 times better now)
Cleaned the carbs and replaced em
Cleaned the airfilters - actually looked almost new
Replaced the sparkplug caps with new ones and kicked it over to see if there was any spark, left-side yes, right-side no. Hoping it is the condenser and not the coils but I don't know if the condenser works like that, is it all or nothing or could one side spark and the other not because of that?? Tried new plugs on both sides with no change, checked the points which seem fine but i picked up a Honda tune up kit (points and condenser) from Dime City Cycles. Will hopefully replace those this Sunday.
Although its not in these pictures, replaced the stock rectifier with one from Oregon Cycles
Then spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning and cleaning more, looks like a lot of rust on the bike but its just surface and I got most of it off with a steel brush and the dremel. If we can get a spark this weekend we'll hopefully get it started.

and here are the pics.....more to come this weekend

looks great, what are the bars youre running? they dont look like traditional clubman bars? where did you pick them up?

Been hearing that a lot!

No spark after replacing the points, plug caps, trimming the original wires and replacing the condensor, spark on the left cylinder but not the right. Will replace the coils and wires this weekend maybe.
