73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! Thanks to all for the kind words!!

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Yeah. This thread is exactly why I joined this site. Gives me hope for my own CB200 build (eventually). Maybe next winter.

Great bike though man.

Did you read my last post? problems. :p

A guy on the hondatwins forum mention checking the cam chain tension. makes sense that you'd want to do that after a rebuild once you get the motor hot. All this is happening at about the same point, when the motor gets fully hot after about 10 minutes of riding. So, i'm hoping its a matter of adjusting a few things. we'll see.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Okay, I dug into the bike today, plugs looked fine nice even tan color to them. I adjusted the cam chain, there may have been a slight problem there as the lock nut was stuck a bit so it may have been mal-adjusted. I did PJ's QD oil test and now have a dirty shop floor. ::) Though it didn't spit oil out the intake side just the exhaust side. rocker arms looked well oiled though. Bike started right up and ran fine. after one stall while it was still cold I did notice that sticky kicker a couple times. I backed the clutch adjustment off a couple turns and haven't noticed it since. I did not road test it yet but will get to that tomorrow.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

I'm trying to figure out a loop to ride tomorrow so that I'm never more than a mile from the shop. :-\

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Ever seen the "Wheel of Death" or whatever it's called at Sturgis?

You could put that right outside the shop.....

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Hysterical!!

Rich, I've got the 130's in now, still not getting what I want at wide open throttle. doesn't seem to change much with jets between here and 150. any thoughts on that? Ive got smooth acceleration and pull until you get to wot then it starts to break or bog. Obviously one of these sizes is right so its got to be something else.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

It could also be a intake / exhaust issue. Too small a filter for WOT, too restrictive of an exhaust (doubt it), etc.

How's the petcock or fuel filter? Not clogged at all im assuming? And what kind of ignition system (points or electronic / dyna or factory coils)?

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Great, you mean I get to spend more money??!! :'(

I started thinking about that last night. I think I'll pull the filters and see what happens. might just need velocity stacks.

I'm running a new stock coil. I could pony for a dyna, what are they like $80?? I want to do the ignition but don't want to spend the dough. Are you still running points? What's the advantage to the longer intake manifold? Do you think that would help?

Thanks for checking in, man I appreciate being able to bounce this off someone.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

This may not be pertinent, but you mentioned home made baffles in straight pipes. Try taking those out and run it somewhere the neighbors won't go ballistic and see if that fixes it. If so, get some mufflers and fine tune it.

Next odd thought. IS the battery sitting on rubber and not touching the frame? Vibration does strange things to batteries.

What is the voltage at higher revs - does it drop off when the revs go up?

That cutting out sounds almost like a broken plate in the battery, but it's as likely to be a short or break in a wire when the bike starts to vibrate at speed. 30 minutes on a dyno would tell you a lot about the fueling as well as the electrics. Is there one anywhere near you?

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Teazer, Great thoughts there. the local harley shop has a dyno, I think a "dyno test" is $75. I would love to pull this little ankle biter in and see the looks on their faces!!

Battery is on rubber. I cut up an old inner tube to make a seat for it. I'll check the volts though just to see what's going on.

I made some progress today. 130 mains and some tuning of the air screws (a little richer mixture) and the hesitation is gone I may try the 135's again now that I've got the hesitation gone as it tends to flatten out just a tad at the high end of the rev range.

I just need to get it out for a good 40 minute ride to see if it breaks down again. I'm going to arrange to have a buddy follow me in a truck.

Photo shoot tonight!! She's all polished up and looking good. Big vintage meet at Owl's head transportation museum this weekend I'll post up some pics from that!!

Also need to do that compression test though it seems pretty strong.

One new thing I noticed in the lot today is that the rear tire is real squirrely. got loose just banging around the lot at 20mph! not sure if its holding air right or not. gotta check that out for sure.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Here's a few prettier pics, It was a little too hot and hazy to get anything really good last night though. more to come in show and shine in a few days!!

Looks great Diesel!

And you are selling it?

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Yeah, I'll throw a pic up of me on it and you'll see why. :p I'm large, 6'1" 205. This was a flip all the way. I'm having a blast riding it around though! Its going to be great fun for a smaller guy or a girl to blast around on.

I've got my XS650 on the lift right now. I pressured washed the frame today and the motor will go back in as soon as I touch up the paint. Theres a thread in the trackers section. I'll update that tomorrow.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Little glitch fellas, starting leaking oil out of the points cover. :p pretty sure this means the cam shaft oil seal didn't seat on that side. I haven't had a chance yet to pull the point plate off and see what's up but thought I'd mention it here. Do you have to pull the top off to replace that? or can you pull it from the side and replace? I will check the manual but though someone here might have an answer. Oh, and when I replace that should I hondabond around the seal?

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Just pull that small side cover to get to the seal. They often "hang up" on the end of the shaft and leak, so be wary refitting it.

5 minute job.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Thanks Teazer. glad to hear that. do you happen to have a part number for that. I found some oil seals on Ebay but can't find a part number in any schematic I have. I'll pull it out tomorrow and have a look at it.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Alright, looks like the engine coming out again.

Crappy cell phone pic but I think you can see what the damage is here. ::)

Not really sure what I did wrong but it does explain a lot including my little seizure a few weeks back. I actually feel pretty lucky I caught it before the cam chain snapped and did catastrophic damage.

I'm hoping to get the motor out this week and will post pics once I get her opened up.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

bummer man. Way cool you don't have to split the cases though
