I can't remember for sure, but I don't think you can clear the studs to get the cylinder off while it's in frame. Top end work is a breeze in frame though.

I would not do the mods I did with the engine in the frame. You will spend more time working around the engine being stuck in one position - than you ever would removing remaining 4 bolts and lifting the complete engine out.

Yup, my point, exactly; maybe you can, but not sure it's worth the trouble.

Consider also: you'll be removing and installing the head a couple times while you fit the pistons... they need to be checked for deck height and likely order specially made gaskets in the right thickness. in my case I also have a megacycles cam and larger race valves, so I had to check for piston/valve clearance with clay. btw I did this all on sawhorses in my back garden.
