'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

John, I had to settle with powdercoating the stock rims. This build's already gone way over budget. After this summer, it will be getting new alloy shoes... and going big bore. ::) I couldn't bring myself to call up Buchanans and fork over 600-800. Just need a good fire season to recharge the bank account!

Amazing work Ringo! The color scheme is perfect! Man, I feel so much more amateur-ish with my build. I can't wait to see this thing on the road. Oh, and if you need someone to ride it while you are out fighting fires, just ship it over to Indiana.

Keep it up man!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thanks man!

Well I suppose it will be pretty lonely for long stretches this summer...

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Sorry, got the clear on, but there was a little issue with a corner of pinstriping peeling up a little and marring the clear. I'll sand it down once it's cured and spray another coat. Mounting the bars, MC, grips and such right now. My tires also came in. I ordered them through a bike shop, instead of online, so they cost about $40 more. ::) But I'm not cool with doing the dick thing and bringing in a set of online-bought tires to a local place and having them mount them. Support the local guy, eh!

................We are waiting on PC'd rims from JRK though.......................... :-\

I went with Avon roadriders. I really wanted Dunlop GT501s...great tires, running them on the 400. But I'm sticking with close to stock sizes and they don't come that small... Those on here with the Avons seem to like them, so we'll see.

Oh, and Tyler, the clear ran on the 3rd coat, like clockwork. Hahaha! Nothing I couldn't fix though.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Glad to hear. That is where it usually goes on me, too :D Glad to hear you got it worked out, though. i want to see pics even with the first clear on....

That's funny, my clear coat ran on the third coat as well.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Thanks guys and yeah Glenn, that's the one pic of clear up right now. Ha ha.

Tyler, there really isn't much to see. The clear looked decent when I sprayed it, but all the overspray settled down during the night and coated it, making it look dusty. Good thing I'm sanding/buffing. But definitely one of many downsides to no ventilation.

I'll run out and grab some pics in a bit though.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

It has to do with cumulative flash off times. You have to compound your flash times with each coat or it all gets too heavy and RUUUNNNS! Took me awhile to figure that out, though, when I should have just asked...

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

I think I remember you saying that. Oddly, the 4th and 5th coats didn't run. I was super cautious after the first run though.

...

Mock-up time. I'm kind of at a standstill because of the rims, so I figured I'd mock it up as best I could. To keep the motivation strong, of course.
