Sounds like you guys are too far away from your work piece, allowing the paint to partially flash off before settling on the surface.
As well as leaving a textured finish, it'll be weak by comparison to properly wetted out paint and will chip/flake easily.
I's strip'm and repaint...

I was kind of thinking the same. Can should be about 6-7" away and moved slowly enough to wet out the surface 1/2 overlapping the previous pass. You probably know this, but just in case you don't, it is worth throwing it out there.

i have never heard of this having an issue... hell Troy did almost his whole bike in it and that came out amazing... i would bet you got a bunk can
his stuff lay'd great... i have used it as well on Several occasions, never had issues. i think that is weird. yoiu are using the rustoleum right?

If I'm not mistaken, Troy also had some issues with the silver too, before getting the hang of it.

Re: 75' XS650 build..

I tried a can of black epoxy paint and it was super glossy.

Re: 75' XS650 build..

I just tried it for the first time today on the fork housings. I used a brass wire brush in the drill press to get them shiny, then I wiped them down with mineral spirits to clean them off, then wiped them down again with a clean rag. Then I sprayed them with the black appliance epoxy paint and it kinda fisheyed in some places so it didnt go as well as I expected.

After that first coat dried for several hours I sanded them a bit with some fine sand paper, wiped them off with a clean rag, and sprayed them again.

They're better but still not as smooth as I'd hoped.

The temperature was cooler today at about 70 or a little more, maybe that's part of it.

Are ya'll using a primer?

this is all goign to flake and chip off... you have a 1/2 hour window to shoot it and then you need to wait a week. it is no joke... if not it chips and flakes off like nothing... you going to want to strip it off and do it again, if you added your 2nd coat after the 1/2 hour that is where you fish eyes came from, epoxies are such picky paints not matter what they are being shot out of!

ya the pic i posted was the silver rustoleum appliance paint, troy used it on his bike as well... CC i thought that he had issues wiht the clear, not the silver, he sanded through his clear... so he had it shot at a body shop. he was VERY happy with the silver... where the hell is Troy at anyway!

Re: 75' XS650 build..

well I painted the fork tubes, triple trees, frame, and some other bits. I got rid of the silver paint and went with the gloss black. the fork tubes and trees came out great. the frame didn't come out so good. I have spots that are scaly (fisheyes I guess). also with this paint how long is the cure time. I painted the fork tubes yesterday around 4pm, today at 2pm I was able to leave a fingerprint in the paint. i'll get some pics up soon.

Re: 75' XS650 build..

well after extreme fustration with this epoxy paint, (after 30hrs of cure time, I can scratch the paint off with ease) I have decided to go to a much more hardcore paint.

I have used por15 in the past and there products are great.

other news is that I have to strip the frame for a 3rd time. not happy with the epoxy paint. I got the rear wheel all buttoned up, started on the front. hopefully by the end of the week I can start putting the bike back together

Re: 75' XS650 build..

Man after reading all the quotes on your paint dramas im starting to freak out about doing mine!!!LOL,, I have used these paints before on other thins and not had any problems and i have use etch primer, so heres hoping :D :D :D

Re: 75' XS650 build..

do you have a stripper tank? how are you getting off the epoxy so easy? if you media is that course to blast it off like that, there may lie your problem... i never use anything over 80 grit. media should be used to lay a profile on the item for the paint/or powder to stick to, so if you are hititng it wiht a course grit you may then want to lighten it to give it a softer profile... we use Alum Oxide... but i have also shot black sand, both work great... wipe down with acidtone and your golden... weird i have never heard of issues with this paint before... hell if you have it blasted down why not just take it in for powder... would cost you about 1/2 what it normally would to lay as the media work is already done.

Re: 75' XS650 build..

well, I was able to scrap it off wit hmy finger nails at first. here is the deal. there is a learning curve with this stuff. here is what I found out. your part needs to be super clean, light/medium coats work better. I wa getting nasty fisheyes and the paint was lifting in certain spots. I think the paint was too think and curing incorrectly. here is the biggest thing I have learned. this shit needs atleast 5 days to cure before you can handle it. the can says 24hrs but that's crap. even at 36hrs I have still leaving fingerprints in the paint. I painted the frame this past sat. and now the paint is to the point where I can't scrap it off with my fingernails and it won't leave fingerprints. so Im at the point of do I give this one more shot or do I say f-it and go the powdercoat route.

well a couple of months back I started a build thread that I neglected to keep updated. for the most part the bike is done. she starts first kick and I did a 500 mile round trip 3 weeks ago without a glitch.

things I still need to do: finish seat, install front fender, install front brake and powdercoat the wheels.

this is what the bike recieved:

powdercoated frame and swing arm
pamcopete electronic ignition
bronze swing arm bushings and new pivot shaft
tapered roller bearings for steering
painted tank and side covers (mercedes 075 silver)
new rear brake shoes
new handle bars, grips, throttle cables and clutch cable
new chain, and sprockets
mac 2-1 exhaust
new headlight and mounting ears
front suspension completly rebuilt
almost everything on the bike is powdercoated.

I did all the powdercoating myself expect for the frame and swingarm

If you have a sharp eye you will notice the rear hoop is about 3inches shorter. I took 3inches out of the rear hoop, welded it back on, chopped the rear fender in half, then added the sparto tailight. I think it turned out great.

hopefully by next weekend I will have the seat done and the rest of the powdercoating. I bought 2lbs of S&S wrinkle black and I'm loving it. I did my valve covers, oil dip stick, alternator cover and some other bits, i'm really hooked on powdercoating.

we enough babbling, here are some pics

here is the seat pan I started today. I followed scrapmetalart thread and I think it came out pretty good. I have about 4 layers right now, I think I need to add 4 more, then I can trim it. I have foam, then it;s off to get covered.
