here is my 76 xs360 as i bought it about 6 months ago. ive been building on it for awhile but haven't started a build thread here. ive got some catching up to do because im actually to the point of wiring now. so she's coming along great. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is only the second bike ive "built" if you wanna call it that. ;)

Re: 76 xs360

so a little more background. i bought the bike and cleaned the carbs and BAM she started right up. i adjusted the tappets, cleaned the oil screen, changed the oil, new tires, new chain, new battery. i drove it around for about a month when i started having problems. the tank was dirty as hell, but i thought id put that off and have two in line filters filter out the crap. that didnt work, so now the carbs were all gunked up, two inline filters and all. someone before me coated the tank over the top of rust. so at this point i decided to do now what i was going to do this winter when i cant ride as much. tear it down. here is the tank

So at this point i had the tank dipped at a radiator shop which removed most of the paint on the outside of the tank. i put on clip ons and now i start the rear sets.

bought these rear sets online for $80 made in china..... hope they last.

i had to cut off the shafts that protruded about 1 1/2" then drill and tap 8mm mounting bolts.

i bought the linkage for the rear sets from grainger, which is about 5 miles away. in the bottom picture, you can see where i cut off the rear peg holders as well.

completed rear sets. it wasnt easy in any way shape or form. i actually broke off a drill bit and went through a ton of bits drilling it out. ive been curious about my placement. it does feel good when im sitting on the bike. any thoughts?

next i started the seat, i ordered it from airtech, expected it to come a little more finished, but it was cheap. i really need to learn how to fiberglass. so... i dont have any experience welding but borrowed my neighbors miller 211 and called my brother to walk me through it. after a few practice welds, i started on the frame.

so this is the last of the catch up posts. here is how she stands right now as we speak.... next i build the box for the battery in the tail. any thoughts on small batterys? im running just the bare minimum. headlight, taillight, and (not the very minimum) but the starter. no blinkers, no guages...

whew... i have some catching up to do. so... i got it put back together enough for a test run anyway. most of the bolts were tight, but one of the rearsets came loose. all in all it was a great maiden voyage. here is a video of the first run.

after this run, i decided to take it apart again, i just wasnt happy with the way i had the battery under the seat. so i cut that off and am working on a new idea. same place, just different set up. im getting some metal tonight and will drag my neighbors welder to my house again. haha sure wish i had that millermatic 211 i have my eye on. would be nice... im learning so much so fast, i keep telling myself the next build will be faster, but its just a LOT of work. i do enjoy the process however. im rambling

well yall... ive been pretty busy as of late. i built a back section to hold the battery that failed miserably. so now after testing a few ideas, this is what ive come up with so far. its a work in progress that is slowly molding and changing into what i want. i was able to fab up the rear battery placement this morning before work so i was able to drive her to work today. im running it with pods and headers only. will this ruin anything until i get the 2-1 i want?

in this one, i got the tail light all dialed in and working. this is funny as shit, i have the back brake working right now, but not hooked up to a brake light but, i do have the light wired on the front brake but dont have the caliper on yet. between the two i made it work today.

anyway, im getting closer and closer. still tons of work to do. oh i was was wondering if anyone has taken a molded seat and with fiberglass change it just a bit? if that makes sense. i want to make the front of the seat a bit narrower, it looks about 1 1/2 inches to wide. ill have to get a picture of that later.

It's looking good. :)
Two questions. Are you using a bungie cord to tie down the battery? If so I think you should fabricate a metal strap instead. You don't want the battery to go flying around if you hit a big bump.
Second I was also looking at those rearsets. Do you think you will have a problem with them hitting the exhaust? Do you have to use the mounting bracket that came with them or can you mount the pegs to your own bracket? And the linkage.. where did you get the pice that clamps to the shifter shaft?

thanks! i plan on a strap of sorts. just getting her on the road for now. the exhaust is changing to a 2-1 configuration, i havent ordered it yet. the shifter shaft is of my own creation. its the old one cut off, ill probably order a new one when i tear it down again for paint.

Are there Baffles in those pipes?

And did you have to Jet, according to an open exhaust? (Assuming there are no baffles...)
