Hey all. I'm Cooper. I live in Longmont Colorado.
Last March I picked up my first motorcycle. Found a 1977 kz650 on craigslist that "was running....a few months ago" I'm sure we all know how that goes. It was a mess. I didn't even bother trying to make it run. Stripped it from the get go. I'll let the pictures speak.

shaved a good number of brackets and mounts I didn't think I would be needing. painted the frame. did the hubs/spokes/nipples satin black and polished out the rims the best I could

Filled some of the dents in the tank. "quick welded" a few pinhole leaks in the tank. Made steady progress on it when I had the funds to do so.

In progress. Quickly built a seat. Pretty lame attempt out of a snowboard deck. Was rushing to get it running in the hopes of riding before the weather gets interesting here in Colorado.

Clip ons, levers, throttle, other bits and pieces here and there. Again, still rushing..

Picked up a tail light and messed around with my factory headlight.

Played around with a few battery options. I'm on a simple kick start only wiring harness that I built. I got my plugs to spark and my compression is great. Carbs are looking good. I ran into a few over fueling problems/cracked rubber carb boots. Overall, I didn't like the direction it was headed. The tank shape bothered me. I should have taken my time. I'm a very detail oriented person and this thing was driving me nuts. SO. I scraped it! I picked up a gpz freshly powdercoated frame, mint tank, fork, seatpan, brand new yoshi 550 exhaust, and works rear suspension... and 5 rubbermade tubs of random motorcycle parts from a friend. A massive $80 well spent.

A rough mock up.

So I started swapping everything over onto the gpz frame. I have the intentions of fitting the kz650 motor into the gpz frame.. And turning this into build throughout the winter. In which I can take my time..do everything the way I should have. Clean and refined.

And to bring you up to speed. Recently quit my job and decided to attend college and pursue my Associates of Arts. Was jobless for a month.

Looking really good dude! Love the colours. I have a Z550 A2 and am currently stripping it all down and repainting but haven't fully decided on the colours, but yours is hopefully the way I am headed. Keep up the good work and keep us posted!

How's the project coming along?
Curious how the 650 engine fit into the GPz frame.

I'm back!

And to answer the question of a kz650 motor in a gpz550 frame...don't do it! It fit miserably! I had it all mocked up and thought it was going to work. The frame was a a half inch too narrow. The engine would have sat a little up in the frame..and it was pushed way back. And the front wheel was still really close to the exhaust. I thought for sure it was going to be a good idea. Turns out...it just wasn't going to happen. It will be in my garage for a while until I have some ambition to find a motor and get it going again.

Well...on to the next I suppose. I was just picked this up today. I was originally looking for a cb550 or cb650..and I came across this guy. It's an 82 kz750. Another bloody Kawasaki! It's been sitting for 2 years. Threw a battery in and tried to get it to start out of dumb luck with no success. Wasn't getting fuel. The carbs don't seem to be moving..more than likely gummed up. The wiring harness is a disaster. Plans are to get it running properly. I'd also like to sort out the bare essentials, hide all the wiring I can't remove, paint the tank, loop the rear, build a functional seat, and ride the piss out of it this summer.

Bam I had it printed out by my buddy that works at staples but if your comp is in your work shop you can just scroll through

any time man....and when you finally get it running and it won't rev past 5,000 rpm ....I know how to fix that too

Check your timing advancer my carbs were the same way so your advancer may be worse than mine so that it isn't starting and yes my bike usually wont even start unless i use the choke when the motor is cold

Timing advancer is on the right side of the engine there are pics of it on the last page of my Fish build thread....its probably gonna need to be lubed up

Chopping up smoothing and looping the rear end.

The pile of wiring I've got going...and this is after the previous owner already pulled out a lot of stuff.

What a mess. Ignition and everything else will be relocated to directly under the seat.

Front is starting to shape up though! Needs shorter brake lines for sure.

Slapped a layer of vintage copper on the tank as a feeler....and I'm not feeling it. I'll figure something out. It's coming along though!

Me and my buddy decided to put back a few New Belgium Rangers and gut the wiring harness last night. It's going to be easier than I thought to tuck everything away and make it look neat and orderly. Planning on soldering and using heat shrink on the really small connections. I need to find something to put the main wiring harness into that isn't electrical tape. Silly previous owners ::) Basically, I need something to bundle/enclose the main wiring harness. The oem flexible plastic stuff would be perfect if it wasn't so haggard. What's everyone else using? And no, a length of old garden hose won't cut it. ;D

Also interested in this question as I am doing the same thing, looking good btw making good progress

College and my other obsession are expensive. But! I'm finally back at it.

Right now I'm in the mix of rebuilding the wiring harness, building an electrics box, properly stripping the tank, and building a fiberglass seat pan. First time using fiberglass and I must say, it's very easy and effective. Here's a few iphone pictures. Didn't feel like breaking out the nice camera. I will next time though! ;)
