78 CB 400 Parts

Hey guys,

I've had this "project" on the go for about 4 years now. I seldom post because I've seldom worked on the bike. I'm currently away for work but will be back in the country by end of May.
Hoping to take this build a little more seriously now that I've got a little more disposable income and less time... Ideally, have it done by end of 2013. Saftied, winterized and ready to ride in early 2014. *sigh*... Thinking of how long it'll take me to get riding again is kind of demoralizing.

Which brings me to my next point, I'm going to be needing some parts, I can't recall ALL the parts I'll need to replace/want to replace off the top of my head at the moment. But I was curious where you guys in Tdot are sourcing your vintage bike parts.

I've been on Kijiji, eBay and Craigslist... This forum, HondaTwins and GTAM... I think I've covered most of my online bases but I was thinking more along the lines of junkyards, scrapyards, bike salvage shops etc... I know there's Ontario Cycle Salvage in Scarborough (if they still exist :s) Are there others?

One piece I'm actively looking for is a headlight with an integrated speedo... I realize this isn't a necessity but I'd love to have one. My tank came to me dented and I've tried to remedy by further denting it into knee indents -I may need a spare tank... Shifter was snapped, Kick starter was bent, I'll def need some new gaskets... Anyway, you get the idea.

I also plan on trying my hand at fiberglassing a seat pan... In the cowl of the seat, integrate a tail light, if possible some fuses and battery? We'll see. I'm definitely not sure what to do about the upholstering yet though since I definitely won't know how to do that, (nor have the equipment) guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks, its good to be back on the forum.

Ebay and craigslist for used/old stuff. Swap meets are great, but we don't have any bike swap meets near where I live. I use Bikebandit and DimeCity for new stuff. Supplies (i.e. fiberglass, hardware, paint) - just about every place you can think of. For the seat you may want to find a local upholstery shop. I went out and bought a used sewing machine and did it myself. I learned a lot, but it was hard and I think I would let a pro do it next time.

Try Bent Bikes on Warton Way in Mississauga. He only open lately on Fridays and Saturdays but has got a ton of old stuff and John's a no bull shit guy and will wheel and deal on everything. Also T.O. Cycle in Long Branch, however counter service is casual to say the least. But Ralph's still cool.
As far as your seat, any decent sewing machine will do leather and vinyl. Must be someone you know.
Cheers, Pete

Alright!!!

That's what I'm talking about, thanks for the new shops to check out Matchbox!
