so here it is.. after much lurking of the forums, i'm finally going to start posting & documenting my CB750F build. this whole bike thing is new to me, so i'm learning as i go. learning that there is alot more jerry rigging/fabbing that needs to go into these things and not a lot of 'bolt on' parts haha. anyways, here are some pics of its progress...
here she is, first arriving my shop, 16K on the clock, seemed like it was only running on 3 cylinders, albeit, smoothly (took a temp reading from cylinder #3 and it was reading cold.. turns out had a cracked intake spigot)
another angle.. fairly good condition, previous owner just had the seat reupholstered (too bad thats getting trashed, that is of course someone wants it)
tear down begins, my bro makin moves in the backround
received my tarozzi clip ons and got excited and threw them on for shits & giggles
beginning tear down of motor to replace valve guides (they were footballed), have the head machined, replace a couple things here and there, replace all o-rings gaskets & have it all powdercoated. i'll be completely honest with you, i feel comfortable rebuilding engines & heads in cars, but this thing was nerve racking, not to mention heavy as hell!
too much going on in such little space
of course, 4 studs snapped while removing, ended up having my machine shop drill & re-tap the holes after multiple failed attempts at welding nuts on them. installing beefier studs
all the parts stripped & laid out to get sent to the powdercoaters
the damn cracked intake spigot i mentioned earlier..
received my manx tt style tank & thruxton seat from the great people at legendary motorcycles.. here it is laid upon the frame. going to have to figure out ways to mount the tank, but have a good idea of how i'll be doing that. bought their seat pan mounting kit to make my life easier too
motor back from powder coating.. did a pretty good job (yes, i know the heads backwards lol, just slapped the pieces together to see how it would look)

anyone got tips on how to get sandblasting media out of the various nooks & crannies? i was gonna dedicate this weekend to getting EVERYTHING out of there.. unfortunately i wont be able to start putting this motor back together until i get the tranny mainshaft bearing in, powdercoater removed it but probably after it was sandblasted, its all seized now __gda__=1361191655_6ead06c742c649505e9e31f0590aad75[/img]
currently on hold with putting the motor back together until i receive a new tranny main shaft bearing, powdercoater removed it but probably after it had been sandblasted. i'm also going to order all the o-rings that need to go back in this engine seeing how much ebay gasket kit didn't seem like it provided me with any.
also waiting on joker machine to finish up their triple trees so cycle x can ship them over to me, clutch cover & their sweet oil pressure gauge. i want to get the engine all squared away before i start to work on the frame.
after many hours of cleaning & removing plugs, i finally got all the sand out.
cleaned up the intake ports a little bit, smoothing out all the sharp angles..
also deshrouded the valves & spark plug in the head..
finally getting the motor back together, had to order the crank case o ring for the oil port though before i put the halves back together. putting in APE main bearing studs.
finally got the tank and seat mounted.. also temporarily installed joker machine triple tree. i'll probably be putting the whole bike back together and redoing the wiring, then taking it all apart again to get the rest of the stuff powdercoated..
rims powdercoated & tires mounted. Slapped everythign back together and temporarily installed carpy pipe to check it out. gonna start wiring up the motor and get it running (just to make sure that after going thru all of this i didn't screw anything up!) then i gotta fab up some rear set brackets..
i cheated & bought DCC's rear hoop w/ slugs. welded it on, shaved it down and welded on filler where the rear shock mount meets up with the frame and shaved that down
Love the build, doing almost the same year! Did you use a special paint stripper to remove the factor sealant/paint from the engine casing? Also, i got a quote for powder coating the engine... something like 500$$$. How does that compare?

no, actually i used my soda blaster to get the paint off, but then my powdercoater told me that he was gonna do it (he sand blasted). what kinda sucked about the sandblasting is that i spent atleast 2 days tryign to get all the pieces of coagulated sand in the various nooks & crannies and all in the oil journals for the crank. $500 is a very good price, he had to do a lot of prep work taping off various parts. also, make very clear what parts you want taped off and what parts you dont, there are a couple of unpowdercoated spots he thought that needed to stay bare, nothing a little black touch up paint wont cover though.
Quick question about your seat. I'm looking at getting the same one. Do you think it's possible to squeeze a passenger on it? Keep in mind I'm on the small side, 30" waist, and my passenger would be tiny.
