78 kz650 a/f ratio settings

Therapy is expensive. Riding is cheap. You decide.
Like the title says. Buddy of mine has a 78 kz650 and he needs to set the a/f ratio. He has pods and a 4-1and it has been re jetted. Whats the proper adjustment for this setup? Someone has to know...

Take it to a shop with a dyno and have them run it with the gas analysis to see what it's doing. Even a Harley shop should be able to do a baseline run and recommend the changes he needs.

I was hoping for a diy way that wouldn't cost him a c-note in dyno fees.

That thread was a blast. There is some good stuff buried in there but mostly the blind leading the blind. All well intentioned and people trying to helpful to be sure.

OK let's try a DIY approach. It's been re-jetted but needs to be adjusted. What jest were fitted and how is it set up? How is it running and what areas of throttle are good and what is bad? is idle and off idle OK but jerky on over run or choke at half throttle or dies at high revs or is it just a general question of how do you know when it's right, type of question?

Those bikes have a reputation for hard/cracked rubber manifolds/insulators. I'd check those first, then I'd get idle and off idle right. Then I'd run it flat out and do a plug chop to get the top end (100% WOT) and then finesse the midrange. The trick on P2 of that thread is right that the way to check part throttle is to start by marking the positions on the grip, so you can tell where you are.

You could also buy an Air: Fuel monitor but they cost more than a dyno session.

Agreed, but there is enough info in there posted by people with the same setup that they should be able to get it close, and close is about all anyone can expect without dyno time.
