Im new to this forum, but am in the process of building a cafe bike out of a 79 cb750. I want to use pods, and because the stock CV carbs are a huge hassle Im looking for mechanical carb options that will work on the bike. so far Ive found only these http://www.dynoman.net/carb/keiCR.html . Any reviews or feedback on them? Any advice or other carb options are greatly appreciated!
I have a set of VB42A Keihin's on mine. Can't remember what exact bike they were off of, something early 80's VTX or VRX or something 750, but the previous owner swapped 'em out. They're still vacuum slide, but they respond better to pods than the stock Keihins.
You could use some vm26ss or vm29ss carbs, found on big Kawasaki's and Suzuki's of the same era as your CB but the carb spacing is likely to be different.
do the GSXR carbs the right spacing for the 750? and do they work well with pods?

I am doing the 890cc Big Bore kit.
So I am using the Keihin CR31 Carbs.
You can use the carbs if you keep the same size as the stock.
I wouldn't go any bigger.

As pointed out by teaser the CB1100f.net forum is a goldmine of info, just search for bst36ss. Many have done the swap some happy some not. Some say by the time you have refurbed a set of 15 year old carbs and sorted out the jetting you may as well have bought a new set of fcrs or the like.
I used a set of bst38ss from a German model 1993 GSXR750WN the only jetting I had to change was to open up the main air jet 2 sizes. I used the carb rubbers from a 1980-82 gS1000 they are a straight fit.
Also have a set of proper flatslide VM29ss of a 85 GSXR750 to go on my cb900 once I sort out the spacing.
If your not after the open frame look I'd stick with standard carbs a lot less hassle

hmm thats all very good to know! ill have to look into it more. as of now i was planning on going with a set of the CR carbs. i know their expensive but they would be able to support any other engine work i want to do down the road.
Keihin CR s are great carbs for a race bike but not really designed for the street. They have been used on the street for years but they make for a less civilized ride.
I have a set of BST36 I think from a 93 that have been completely striped cleaned, and run through the ultrasonic tank that are going on ebay when I find a few minutes. I bought them to see if I could make them work on a completely different application and they won't (hint I need only three), so they are going.
You could also look at an EFI system and use something like a Microsquirt to drive the injectors. I have a rack from an R1 that I placed on the motor and there's no way they can work in my application, so that's another set to go back to ebay.
For a street motor in stock or mild state of tune, I would strongly recommend a set of modern CV carbs. Do the research on that DOHC form and ask the guy that put a set on his beautiful 900

VB42A's are the stock carbs for the 1979 CB750K Honda. Some say they run good with pods, most say they dont and need the stock air box to perform properly.........George
thr problem with individual filters for each carburetor on a 4 cylinder engine, is the the external air temperature and pressure is different for the center carburetors compared to the outboard carburetors. A proper tuning and adjustment requires somewhat different settings for the inside versus outside carbs. Since most people jet them and adjust them equally, the tune is really compromised and gives uneven results.
The stock system makes sure the airbox supplies all 4 carburetor with the same temperature and pressure air. This allows for more even running.
Stock airboxes don;t look cool, but they serve an important function is delivering air that isn't turbulent, a higher pressure to one carb then another, and consistent temperature.
Racers will tune each carburetor separately to achieve smoother results. A lot of work for a street bike and not many really know how to tune a carburetor properly. There is more to it then just changing the main jet.
Not an expert by any means.
But I would give the folks at Dynoman or Sudco a buzz and see what they think.
They are all very helpful.
I should be posting some stuff on my build soon. I will not have a full blown build thread beacause my home computer was higjacked and took all of my earlier build pictures with it.
thanks for all the input! ive been doing a lot of reading and research and have moved on from the crs. as of now its gsxr carbs unless i can find some way to get the sohc mechanical slide carbs to work. i know the spacing is different but im hoping to figure out some way to get everything lined up. has anybody tried this? it seems like a pretty obvious solution unless im missing something? anyway, any advice, opinions etc would be appreciated
