Hey guys, wanted to introduce myself with a new cx500 build. I live in Michigan and been building bikes for the past year. This is my latest build-its a 79 Honda cx500 with 3000 miles that was built in the past 2 months. i have a complete description of the build on a cx500 forum, so if anyone has any questions i will be glad to answer. This bike has a lot of fabricated and modified parts.

My next build is a cx500 custom that i will start on monday, and the build will be documented here on this forum. Check it out and tell me what you think.Thank you

Nice looking bike. Any pictures of the build?
i had the whole build at cx500 forum, but if you need something in particular, let me know.
Just a few things about the bike. A lot of polishing, front suspension, clutch cover, radiator side covers including every bolt and nut. Rear fender cut and welded to the frame, the front fender cut and welded back together. Brand new Biltwell seat, that i tore apart and made a new aluminum pan, trimmed the foam and put it back together. 12ga Aluminum side covers, silver plated velocity stacks, new housing for the speedometer, clubman bars, new Spitfire tires, and so on like the tank is treated inside(nu rust)new battery tray and electrical all cleaned up. But the most important thing, i think, is the 3000 miles on the bike.
Here are a few pics of the carbs when i got it-they looked brand new, i have never seen carbs like this

and a valve cover from a bike with 25k miles and this one with 3k

i was skeptical about the 3k original miles, but more i took it apart, more i knew that this bike really has the miles.

here is a video of the start up, and a walk around

I'm guessing those are the Harley exhausts? They seem very quiet in the video, with not much of a growl - can you confirm?
I'm currently searching for exhaust alternatives on my cx.

exactly those are harley mufflers-they are not that quiet on a cx btw. Much better than the stock ones
in order to use them i have added a support bar to the brackets.

who needs one? :)most of the builds dont have one, heck they dont even have a speedometer

I guess if you don't plan to ride it then it's not needed ;) I run one on my cx but I like to give her some and it's nice to know she's fine with it :)

Cheers

so basically all the cx's out there that dont have a tach with the temp gauge on them are not rideable? or im not getting something here?

most of the guys have a separate temp gauge or a idiot light

and if you look through the tech section you will see one that didnt and cooked his motor last month

i dont run the factory gauges on one of my bikes but my dan moto has the temp gauge built in

i see what you're saying now.I might install one, its not a problem, but im afraid its going to be sold by then and i will have to tell the new owner what to do.I would never ride a cafe hard enough for that, unless its set up for track.Thats why i have my sports bikes. And most off the people that buy them, they use them to ride around town once in a while. Not that they can not be ridden on a highway or for more than 200 miles :)

the reason you need a temp gauge is to let you know when something goes wrong

you could have a airlock low water level

the impeller come loose a blown head gasket

or a simple stuck thermostat

i have not had any of mine over heat in years but i just bet if my temp gauge quit it would

If anything the CX is a bike that has the reputation of being over cooled? I also live in Michigan and have the "E-fan" I've never heard it come on. The missing tach, eh, who cares the redline on the CX is 8250rpm with pushrods!
As far as the Harley Dyna exhaust go I feel they're a marked improvement on the OEM Honda. I think they look better than the stock Honda CX. The Hondas' by now are rusty and the Dyna HD have the best chrome around. I've sold a dozen pair of them and never had a complaint. The sound is pleasing just enough that you can hear the V-motor (nearly every V engine sound's pretty good on it's own) about half way to (not too) LOUD from the stock.
On my CX500 I have a two into one header with a cut down sportbike carbon can and that has an excellent sound. K&N filters also help with throttle on induction groan. The sound of a bike is very important to riding pleasure IMO.
