81 CB125 - Craigslist to Cafe

Ok Guys, This is the first time I have ever owned a motorcycle and only ridden them a handful of times. I was playing around on the barter sections of Craigslist and stumbled upon this turd. I traded a kid a Playstation 3 for this 1981 CB125S, and he gave me $50 bucks. The PO had turned this bike into some sad sort for dirt bike, and I plan on taking it back to a nice cafe racer. He dropped a dirt bike tank and some nobby tires, along with some terrible flood light wired up for a head light. I'm going to need some serious help finding parts, and I'm sure I'll ask some pretty stupid questions along the way. The motor runs pretty strong so probably not going to mess with it too much, maybe convert to a 12V. I have a tank ordered off fleabay that should be in today or tomorrow, along with some other parts. Below is a pic in front my last project. I plan on tearing it all down this weekend.....stay tuned

I genuinely feel sorry for that bike right now... Interested to see how the build transforms it. I'd lose the front wheel for whatever the stock size is.

HA, the LandCruiser is def not for sale! That's my project, '73 Toyota LandCruiser FJ40. I just got this little jewel on the porch this evening. Anyone got thoughts or links to some solid tank restoration?

That looks awesome dude and should be a fun resto for you to go along with the FJ40... You a MUD member by chance?

Yep, def a MUD member. I'm pretty much done with the truck. The top is getting restored now, and once it is done i'm getting it painted and i'll be finished.

Very nice... im under same name on the mud and currently attempting to find a good FJ60 for the winters here. Along with that will be the cafe bike for the summer (when I'm not pedal training that is).

So, started tearing the bike apart and hit a small snag tonight that might end up scraping the whole bike. I believe the PO was just an absolute idiot. Someone decided to cut the frame and remove where the seat tube meets the main frame. I'm not really sharp on motorcycles, but I believe this pretty much makes this frame trash....is it salvageable? What do you think? abandon ship...

Yeah pretty butchered..

Could you get another frame for cheap from somewhere?
Spose then you could start with the new frame, and then clean and transfer other bits off this one..?

I've got two spare CB100 frames, but I think the shipping from New Zealand will kill ya! ;D

Good luck, I'll be watchin 8)

Good luck! It's a fucking piece of crap but lots of odds and ends look salvageable. If the engine is sound ............. and if you can weld you could build a new rear top rails assembly as the main spine looks undamaged .
Some of the best builds are the ones with least to lose :) :)

I'm with Erskine. I think you can salvage it. At this point, if its titled, and you don't have squat invested - find someone to help you weld in a new piece. Do it right, and you'll never know it was cut.

Thanks guys, I found a good used frame for a decent price and free shipping....can't be cheap to ship a frame from Pennsylvania to Alabama. The engine on the bike runs awesome. I rode it a couple times around the block, and didn't see any mechanical issues. So really only need a little tune up. So, the tear down continues while I wait for the new spine.

some people are a little special "dang my tank do fit, i know ill just cut out some the frame support" lol

great to hear you've sorted a new frame :)
