Re: 82 GS450E Scrambler from Aus - Carry Rack Painted

Had a look in natural light after work yesterday and found some bits needing a touch up. The top of the cross rails weren't looking spectacular due to the way it was hanging. Not sure how well the pic's show it:

Gave it a light sand with 600 grit and you see how easily that paint would've come off in use:

Cleaned it up with wax and grease remover and a tack cloth and gave just the top another three coats:

Hopefully that sorts it and it should still be fine to mount up on Sunday if I get time.

Have you thought about hitting it with some clear afterwards? That might help it hold up to use and keep the black looking nice

I hope you can prove me wrong, but in my experience that paint is going to come off pretty quickly when you start using the rack. Might be worth checking out getting it powder coated. I had a set of wheels done at Northside Powder Coaters (Everton Hills) a few years back and they were pretty cheap ($45 per wheel I think - blasted and coated).

Looks good nonetheless ;)

If you have a way to bake it that will really help. I try to bake everything I spray paint. It makes it super durable. At least this has been my experience.

To be honest no, didn't think of that at all! I haven't cleared any of the satin black bits I've done (dash, battery box cover, speedo sensor mount) and so far so good. This is probably a different case though...

If it's a problem I can always rip it off and do it again as I'll still have the stock grab rail to go back on.

Cheers Hillsy, although I suspect you may be right...

I had no idea powder coating was so cheap! I didn't even think about that as I've always considered the cost to be prohibitive... serves me right for not enquiring! Any idea how it goes over chrome? As I said above I can always rip it off again later and get it redone ;)

BTW, did you get my PM about the next GSR run at all? Not far away now...

I used to but not any more. All the high temp paint stuff I baked in an old BBQ we had, but once I'd finished that we tossed it finally. Not really game to stick it in the oven we cook our food in...

Heaven is so far away.

Usually, they would media blast the parts before powder - that way they know they are starting with a clean surface. So no worries about any chrome.........

Looks good Pete!

You can see it's a little off-centre in the third pic but it works good enough for me.

So that's it, she's all finished and complete now...

I'll get some really nice pic's after a bath at some point just for "completeness", but now it's just ride, service, and tune... love it! :D

Soooo, now what ??? You do have something in mind for another build, right? I mean, you just built a great bike, built a great work bench, have all the tools, bought the mercury thing a ma bob for syncing the carbs. I'm not kidding, now what? ;D

Haha thanks mate! Yes very happy with the end result :D

The carb sync won't be real handy for the next project, but yeah I have started... just been to slack to post a new thread up on DTT yet, but I will start it in a few minutes.

Will link back here when it's done... will be in the restoration area ;)

Yay the Duc gets some love next. Great build Pete. If you do half as much attenton to detail on the Duc it will be twice as nice.

Cheers,

Still haven't gotten any final really good clean and polished pic's yet but I still plan on it.

In the meantime, I need an aux power socket to power the wideband analyser I hope to acquire soon, and it will also be handy if I need to charge the phone while out and about or whatever.

So...

Made a bracket:

Did up some wiring so this could go straight to the battery with a 10amp fuse and a switch and a LED to tell me when it's on:

Installed:

And it doesn't photograph well but switched off:
