Thanks you. Glad the little things I do are noticed by others.
Sorry for the lack of updates. With my father passing away in September the last several weeks have been crazy. Not much work done to the bike. But looking to get everything wrapped up this month.
Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Wiring, seat, final assembly, cables
Thanks for the info!
Sorry to hear about your father.
I ended up picking up an 82kz for a steal, hoping to piggy back off of your build since I really like what you've done so far. I'm young and I haven't done too much work on motorcycles so I have a couple of noon questions.
you can run the bike fine without tach cable and the gauges right? I can just undo the wiring and it'll be okay, as in no strange grounds? I work on a lot of mopeds and there are funky things like if the taillight bulb is out it won't start or if the horn isn't grounding right it won't start. Just odd things.

He has a 79' Harley XLS 1000 Sportster he handed down to me. Going to do a full restoration. Lot's of powder coat, new parts and polish coming this winter.
Ha, thats awesome. That's a pretty clean base you got there.
You will be okay with just unplugging the tachometer from it's harness. Of course you will have to create a type of threaded plug going into the engine block.
I can't wait to see my seat done. I picked up some old jackets at Goodwill, cut them up last night and I am not liking how it turned out. I keep going back and forth on doing it myself or having it professionally done. Thinking.....have a upholster do it. ;D

I have a question, when you hooked up your led turn signals did they stop flashing? I hooked mine up and they come on but don't flash, I thought maybe the circuit isn't really getting complete so I plugged in the stock rear and it flashes with one out of two being stock. Is there not enough voltage flowing now to flash? Anyone have any experience with this?
If you are planning on using LED turn signals I'm pretty sure you have to switch your flasher assembly to one that will support a LED turn signal. The original, stock assembly is not capable of supporting the new technology. Also you should search in the electronics thread for your answer. I'm sure it has been covered many times...and if you still cannot find your answer you should start a new thread in the corresponding section. It's not polite to hijack a thread.
Good luck.

Big fan of this build, having a kz I know NOTHING is bolt on so I can appreciate this even more. About the tires, notice any difference having the oversized front? I love these for the price.
If your looking for what's supposed to be really good mid-level shocks try amazon for some progressives. I got 412 series rears and front fork springs for 281 shipped.
Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Wiring, seat, final assembly, cables
Took her to a local shop to get a quote on a few things.
Fabricators that I originally had planned to make a few things fell through. Guess they don't want to make any money or ever call me back.
So....another guy will custom make me a aluminum tig welded tray and box. Changing to a much smaller battery as well. Also got a quote on a hand made stainless exhaust.
Also the original upholsterer fell through which is frustrating. Now I have to take it to another guy. Hopefully this will not be a recurring thing.
Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Wiring, seat, final assembly, cables
I can hook you up with a guy that does good seats. He made mine for my kz440 and it came out perfect. I can post a pic if you want. He can make you an identical one at a very reasonable price
Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Wiring, seat, final assembly, cables
Hey man,
You bike looks great. I see that you have slid the stanchions up in the triple clamps a bit to lower th front end, but have you also lowered the forks internally and if not do you plan to?
I'm working on a KZ650 and plan to lower the forks (spacers internally) and am trying to gauge how low I can get away with. My previous KZ I just slid the forks up about an 1".
I hope you get your fabrication woes sorted out soon!

Thanks! Forks pushed up 1"or so. I did not want to go anymore than that. No need to really IMO. Forks are not lowered internally, I may in the future or do a USD fork swap. But that would be next years build if decided.
I wouldn't go more than 1 1/2" from what I have gathered.
I hope it gets sorted out as well, it's really put a damper on my motivation and attitude to get things done. First guy had my box for 2+ months without even touching it. I cannot start my wiring without a base of where everything will live and I will not throw it together to get it done. It's going to be right the first time.
