Hey guys, after many many many months of searching for a Honda CB550, I eventually ended up with a 1983 XV750. My first bike and my first build so I'm super stoked! Still a noob, but I'm hoping some of you guys could put me in the right direction.

Picked up this beauty for $1200!

Somebody put lower bars on and didn't shorten the cables. Those will all need to be shortened if you plan on keeping those bars, and will definitely need to be shortened if you fit clip-ons. I bought the GS550 i have like that, didn't even notice it until a week after I brought it home. Luckily I'd already dabbled in cablemaking for another project ::)

Nice looking bike otherwise.

Aiming for either a cafe or brat look(Same thing in my books). Definitely getting clip ons lol. Any good links to find some throttle cables?

a few days of forum lurking, google searching and sifting through parts websites, you should start getting a better feel for what you like/dislike.

there definitely isn't a shortage of info to be found here.

Since its your first bike I would recommend riding it for a while as it is, get a feel for it and then decide what mods you want to make from there. Do one thing at a time, so you don't get overwhelmed or end up wasting the whole riding season with a bike in pieces (which I have done many a time)

Oh and before you ride it check to make sure none of those cables are frayed or pinched up at the handlebars. If they've been like that for a long time the cables could be damaged.

Does she run?

That's actually a pretty nice looking bike as is. Definitely ride it for a while and make sure you want to cut it up. I've owned several Viragos. ad they make a great platform for a custom (pics of my '82 920cc street tracker below). Watch out for the "box of rocks" starter. They all have it eventually and the only permanent cure is swapping the starting system and left side cover off a later model 1000cc. Almost a fatal flaw.

My starter is actually clunking lol.

Been busy with work but picked up a great find yesterday. I thought I might as well post this up since I'm in line at the dmv lol.
