88 Honda Shadow VT1100 Running Rich

Hey Guys, posting for a buddy of mine. He recently acquired an 88 VT1100. When we first looked at the bike, it would not start without the aid of ether. The PO redid the carbs and the bike now runs. Now, the problem, when he took delivery of the bike it ran fine. for a week and a half. Couple of days ago he was riding and the street side turn signal separated from its mounting bracket in which it put pressure on the choke cable. Since this "accident" his bike has been running rich. When he would get on the throttle, smoke would pour forth. He adjusted the cable with small improvement. Still continues to run rich and stinks to high heaven when following behind him. No loss of power, no bogging. Just smoking. So, any ideas what is going on? Air filter and pipes are stock.

Can you see if the choke is actually closing? Might be the cable is stuck or kinked. Also wondering if the fuel in the float bowls is at the right level that can cause a rich condition. I am not an expert :( hopefully someone will chime in and know just what is wrong. Those two things will get you started while you wait for the professionals. =-)

We looked at it tonight and it looks like the choke cable is sticking half way. Float bowls crossed my mind as well, but this was something that started happening a week after taking delivery of the bike, and the PO stated the carbs were redone prior to delivery.
